Do we drive campers?
Perhaps it is local custom but most folks in these parts call Ruby “a camper”.

It really doesn’t bother me, in fact I find it amusing but a LD is anything but a camper; it is a boondockin’, butt kickin’ travelin’ machine. What do you hear and how do you feel about it?

Dave,

“Oh yeah!” On the butt kickin’ travlin’ machine. I couldn’t agree with you more.

Over the past two years of drivin’ “Ms. B. Haven” all around from So Cal to Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, all the comments we have received about our RB have been very positive. “I love your rig”, “Do they still make Lazy Daze?”, “Beauty”, to thumbs up, horn honks and folks catching up to talk to us about all that is Lazy Daze. It’s fun and I take it all in each and every time.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again...I thank my Lucky Stars for finding Lazy Daze and and a wonderful Wife who would allow me to purchase my dream RV.

Long live Lazy Daze.

When I hear the term "camper," I automatically think of a slide in truck camper.

(I was going to add a picture of a truck camper we once had, but it appears if the picture is on my computer, I can't do so...the image icon wants an URL.)

Do we drive campers? Let's see what Mr. Webster has to say about it!

I don't mind camper. The one that I don't understand how people say it with a straight face is "coach". I definitely missed the memo on that. Now "chuck wagon" I could possibly get behind.

Matt, “coach” is just slang for the more proper “Motor Coach”. This term is most correctly spoken through clenched teeth, like Thurston Howell III. For best effect, be sure to couple Motor Coach with “lifestyle”. This is the best way I can think of to add tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to ones rather pedestrian camper. A few phrases of French thrown in may also help.

I rather think that House-car describes it best. I'm okay with Motor Home, Motor Coach, Class C, etc., but camper, not so much.   ::)

We don't take offense to our unit being called a camper.  It all depends on the folks we're talking with, what they typically call an RV, and up in the northeast, most of the residents use the term "camper" to mean whatever you go RVing in, be it a Lance truck camper, bumper pull, fifth wheel, motorhome, etc.  In some RV groups, rather than using "motorhome", the single syllable "coach" is used, possibly stemming from the club, FMCA, where (currently) MC stands for "motor coach".

And you know, you can use the term "camper" to discourage pushy sales when shopping.  "No, sorry, we're not interested in new patio furniture/half a side of beef/a new satellite TV provider today.  We're in a camper".   ;D

We refer to it as a “camping car”, how it is called in France. A trailer is a caravan. In Germany it’s a Vohnmobile. When you are channeling Gypsy culture it’s a Roulotte.

It’s all just labels, maaaaan, just labels.

"Do we drive campers?"

Campers can not be driven... at least not without a vehicle of some sort, such as a pick-up truck, to carry them.

I personally 'drive' a Lazy Daze Class C motor home!

You can call it anything you want, with two exceptions:

Trailer Trash & Too late for dinner.   O:)

My friends took delivery of their 2001 MB that I bought for them in Ventura (Ca.) and it is now back in Mass. They had the plates mailed out here for me to put on. They have special plates that are stamped with "Camper". I think that is more of a regional all inclusive term like Michelle stated.

When I was growing up, campers were something mounted in the bed of a pickup truck. My dad had campers on his pickups.
My aunt and uncle has an early Class C and they called it a motorhome.
I imprinted early on these terms.

My Dad had campers, RV’s and Trailers. I too enjoy RV’s. One of mine was a Mini C. One was a Travel Trailer. I’ve never had a camper but I have camped out.

Currently toasting by a nice fire with my daughter. Keeping the coach warm while we share pumpkin pie and a nice chilled bottle of Moscato.

Doesn’t get much better than this. Camper, Trailer, RV or Tent. It all adds up to one thing. Quality time with family and friends.

Cheers!

Interesting topic.   I refer to myself and, of course,  DW as 'camper'.  I refer to 'Baxter' as the RV.   <smile>  most of the non- rv owners have no idea what we, rv owners, are talking about or for that matter care.

I kind of use the terms interchangeably.  In VA it is important to register your class C as a Motorhome though.  Virginia uses personal property taxes (PPT) instead of higher rates for income taxes.  The PPT pays for county items like infrastructure and protection (fire and police).  It is up to the counties what is taxed.  The county I live in taxes all motor vehicles the same.  The county I store the RV in taxes Motorhomes as real prosperity, like a second home or a cabin.  The value of most motor homes is low enough that they are not taxed.  The PPT goes to the county in which the vehicle is stored or garaged.  Not where the tax payer lives.
My father always called them campers.  The 62 Class C based on a Ford Camper Special that was not cut away but the "house" was bolted to the frame instead of a truck bed; the slide in camper; and the 5th wheeler.  But he was from PA.

In Missouri, "camper" seems generally interchangeable with travel trailers/pop-ups/class Bs/pickup inserts, while RVs are the bigger/self-contained Cs/As/diesel pushers.  When I was a kid our neighbors had what seemed a marvel to me--it was like a cross between a TT & pop-up--no "tent wings" to fold out, but the top was like a vertical slide, raising up for the 6'+ dad to walk comfortably, but dropping down to car height to tow behind their station wagon.

From a terminology standpoint, I usually say RV.  I typically only use "coach" when discussing the bits added to the vehicle by LD.  The Ford stuff is "body".

To me, "coach" as a vehicle implies a Prevost-level machine.

Maybe it's a regional thing, like pop, coke and soda meaning the same thing.

Could be.  Around here, coke is known as 'ispepsiok'.
