Age of spare tire?
So how bout it folks, do you buy 6 tires or 7 tires? And do you know how old your spare is?

I just today exchanged my old spare with a new one, manufactured in June of this year.

Surprisingly enough the old spare was, well, 'old'! It was a Michelin. I'm not sure of it's date code but I stopped using Michelin tires back about 2009. Sure, it might have been okay for a while but I just did not want to chance it.   8)

2004 rig. First tire change did not replace the spare. Prayed like hell I wouldn’t need it. Kept it aired up and it held it’s air well over the years. Replaced all 7 tires late summer 2017. Very relieved I never had to test my cheapskate nature!!!

When I got the last set of tires at Discount Tire, I asked the tech to check the spare after he put on the new ones. He said they were not allowed to handle (pressure up) any tires over 10 yrs old. Since the tire was 12 yrs old or so (the original), I bought a new cheapie tire for the spare.

I replaced the original 2003 spare with a new one around 2014.  It was well worth it in October when I felt a tire losing air on a long trip.   I was able to put the spare on and continue along with the trip, dealing with the problem a week later when I returned home.  I would not have been comfortable driving that distance on the original spare.

The problem was a leaking rubber valve stem on a front tire.

Our MidBath is a 2007 (but interestingly enough it has the 2006 wheels, and yes the vin is a 2007 vin).  I replaced the six tires that do business with the road in 2012 after getting home. When Michelin had the recall, maybe 2015, I purchased a replacement spare so it would match the new tires.  I'll replace the road tires at 5 years old.  I might wait another year to replace the spare.
