2009 MB Lounge Update
We removed the carpet in the lounge along with all the staples.    We were pleased to see that the floor was in perfect condition with no hint of mildew (original owner had cleaned the carpet several times).  After consulting with one of our LD amigos, we also decided to remove the carpet on the back wall.  Margee just didn't like that carpet one bit and wondered what was it's purpose.  I attached a before and after picture of the back wall carpet.  (We were pleased to notice that the inside of our LD home smells fresher without that 8 year old carpet.)

We looked at the lounge sliders and decided they needed a bit of TLC.  So we removed the semi-carpeted leg covers and sanded them.  We then stained them to match the LD oak cabinets.  I decided to leave the staple holes as it gives the leg character.  ;) We put non-skid rubber pads on the bottom of the legs.  We're liking the results much better than 3-sided carpeted legs with bare wood feet.

One area of the plywood was of poor quality ... I would not have used it.  We filled the space with wood glue.  It was just the first layer of the plywood.  We trimmed all the loose material ends and seated some of the staples which were not flush.

We're pleased with the progress on our lounge project so far.  Finally, please excuse any typing errors.

I think that you may have answered your question on the purpose of carpet!  ;)

In my experience, whether in residential or RV construction, carpeting is often used to cover a 'multitude of sins', i.e., poor quality materials and sloppy, uneven underlayment preparation. Slapping carpeting over a subfloor (and other areas like the back wall of the LD) is usually cheaper, both in materials and labor costs (skills and time) for the builder. (The supplier for LD who makes out the best is the guy with the staple concession!  ;) )

Carpet? Meh. Carpet (and the pad!) is a dirt and moisture trap and difficult (and expensive) to keep clean, particularly if one lives with sloppy people, kids and/or animals. Hard-surfaced, easy to clean, waterproof, wear-resistant flooring, in a house or RV, is far preferable, IMO, but, as always, YMMV.

The first thing I did to our’s was remove the carpet and replace it with linoleum. In fact, the vast majority of upholstery was replaced, which had an immediate impact on the freshness of the RV. After 34 years, who would have thunk?
On the kick panels on the benches, I also ran linoleum to kid-proof them a little more.

Just to clarify, the poor quality plywood was one of the kick panels.  The floor under the carpet was wonderful.  On another note, this afternoon, we did a small experiment with a Woolite treatment on a section of a lounge cushion.  The fabric is still in fine condition, but it's had 9 years of use.  We're hopeful a Woolite treatment will make the test area a bit more fresh.  Margee has advised me that I'm the one who will have to test for freshness.  So, if the treatment makes a difference, we'll use Woolite on all the cushions on a warmer day like today.
Ed, thanks for keeping us updated on your projects with photos and descriptions. They could be very helpful to project-minded members.

Recently, Chris suggested using  STP Tuff Stuff Multi-Purpose Cleaner for the upholstery .
We took his advice and gave a try and found it to do a nice clean job of cleaning...and yes it smells fresh.
Margee might like it. My super sniffer wife didn't find it objectionable...that's a good endorsement.
