transmission fluid
Tomorrow we are having our 31' transmission fluid and filter changed.  It has about 40,000 miles on it.  We have had this rig since about 24,000 miles. We have towed a Jeep Wrangler on majority of trips.  Most of our travels have been in Southwest, Northern
Pacific Coast and throughout California.  (That is where we live).  It is not having any problems but thought we would do maintenance on this since we tow.  Question:  Do any of you do maintenance on your trans regularly or just when you have been doing some hard driving?  Any thoughts? Thanks.   ::)

Personally I am a big fan of preventative maintenance.
I use this Ford site as a guide.  Your owners manual is also a great maintenance resource. Enter your model year and mileage in this site and it will show the Ford recommended maintenance schedule.

Maintenance Schedules | fleet.ford.com

I usually do the recommended maintenance at shorter intervals just because I do.
For my 2015, towing, it shows transmission fluid change at 60,000 miles. I'm going to do it at 50,000.

This is our practice as well.  We had Ford do a transmission flush at about 49,000 miles.   We may do a transmission fluid change at 75,000 miles.   This is not an expensive transmission maintenance service given the alternatives.  And we tow a Subaru, but most of the time on relatively flat roads.

I put Mobil 1 ATF in my LD when I bought it at 25k miles.  I replaced it around 65k.  I remember wondering about which fluid to use since Ford recommendations have changed since my '03 was built.

The transmission is expensive and inconvenient to replace, and pulling a vehicle this size (even without towing) is a big load.

I can deal with a broken A/C or fridge.  The trip is ruined by a broken transmission.

Your E450s's owners manual has the required change intervals and type of fluid used, consider it your LD's bible.
Our 2003 has a 30,000 mile change interval, when towing.

BTW, towing is hard on transmissions. Our 2003 LD has pulled a Jeep for around 80,000 miles.
The transmission died at 99,000 miles and cost over $5000 to replace.
Fluid changes are cheap in comparison.
I recommend full flushes instead of just an oil change. The oil pan only hold 8 of the total 18 quarts.

I did a flush and fluid change on our 99 26 at 65,000.. along with a catch up of all other maintenance actions which I was not sure had been performed (bought the RV with 30K and only records were for the coach and oil changes) - including cooling system flush, ball joints, front and rear brakes and a rear seal.  The pay off is that on the worst thing I have ever had happen on the road is a service engine soon light (code 1406 loose vacuum hose) and loss of turn signals when the flasher condenser failed.   Following the maintenance recommendations is the only way to maximize reliability, especially with a vehicle that carries so much weight and often tows... The other key is having the work done by a reliable, high standards mechanic which is not always easy to find.. but the Ford dealer in our small town has been good for us so far. .

I had our '06 TK's tranny serviced at 25k and just last month at 53k, in anticipation of our present trip to Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Although we don't tow, I'm glad I spent the bucks as the tow-haul mode has gotten an extensive workout on 3 weeks of mountain ascents and descents. We retreated to Port Townsend, after the smoke in eastern Washington became oppressive and no end was in sight.
We are not going to try the eastern return during the summer anymore. Three years of summer smoke is enough. Next time, it will be a spring time trip.
Off tomorrow to the mouth of the Columbia, for the long holiday weekend.
