Carpet "strip" removal
I need to remove one of the strips of carpeting on either side of the entry step well; it's only a 2"X10" strip, but the carpeting appears to be glued to the subflooring. (The piece that is damaged is part of the carpeting that covers the back and side of the step well, so it will have to be cut off.)

Two questions:

1. What should I use to remove the carpeting, mesh backing, and glue residue from the floor?
2. What suggestions does anyone have for re-covering the area? (The carpeting is green; LD doesn't use this anymore, and trying to "match" the carpet with a remnant of whatever is not something I want to do..) A wood flooring strip? Tin can lids? Other?

Thanks for any ideas! (Want a dog!?)  >:(

Hi Joan. My cat recently shredded part of the carpet on my step cover. It was authentic LD blue, un matchable today. I re-covered the step filler with a tougher indoor/outdoor material, so I feel your pain.
When I picked up my coach in February it was raining, and LD used a piece of scrap carpet as a protector for my carpet. I cleaned and kept that piece for a future step filler for someone with a green interior. Authentic Lazy Daze green, circa 1999, a piece about 16" x 12". Yours for the asking. RonB

Joan, assuming you are right and it is glued on, get pliers and start at a corner, and pull it, ripping it in pieces if necessary.  You can try working a putty knife behind it but I doubt that will work.  A vibrating blade tool might work, but I don't know.  Anyway, once the carpet is off, if they DID use carpet adhesive, it will be rock hard.  Don't bother trying solvents.  There is a slim change that a heat gun might soften it enough to scrape off, but I expect you will need to get a power sander and the coarsest sandpaper you can get.  Tool rental places should have them.  A 5" random orbital sander will get the bulk of it.  You can get smaller sanders that will get into corners for the tight spots.  Wearing a dust mask, just work it until you are through the adhesive.

Replacement - lots of options.  The simplest may be peel and stick vinyl tile.

Have fun!

Joan, I found that are on our '92 that are was glued and...wait for it...
Stapled!  Staples being the staple of RV fabric to wood attachment.

It was easy to pull he carpet with pliers, and I scraped then sanded the residual hardened glue residue. Once it was cleaned up and smooth enough, I applied some of the wood composite flooring to the walls in the step. Could have glued on any carpet if I chose to. I would have stapled it in place to give the glue a hand.

We considered laying in rubber mat material. And the sub-floor walls were clean enough (once I did a bit of scraping and sanding), so that the end result would not appear bumpy.
