FanMate & the MB
With the onset of summer's warmer temps inevitable, I'm considering the addition of vent covers. Both of my fans are fantastic (!) and so I would like to go with the FanMate.

Does anyone have experience with the installation of the FM on the bathroom vent (MB)? I was up on the roof this afternoon and noticed that there are only a few inches of clearance between the vent and shower's sky light. Maybe not enough space for the FM? I've read where others have modified the maxxair to accomodate the increased airflow from the FF should that be the only option.

For those with covers (maxxair II), which color do you prefer? The logical choice seems to be the white (cooler & aesthetically pleasing), however I enjoy the natural light provided by the vents and think maybe the translucent smoke would allow more of this to pass.

Thanks to all those who unleash their opinion!!

We have a pair of white Maxxair II covers, no experience with the smoked. However, I would be surprised if the smoked transparent would pass more light than the translucent white. What you WILL avoid with the white is finding the sun boring into your eyeballs once it hits the sweet spot relative to your seat. If your vehicle has a tinted sunroof, does it bother you when the ceiling panel is slid back and the sun beats into you? As you can tell, I am not a fan of sunroofs...

As for the white, my legally-blind mother-in-law complains about the ceiling light 'on' when I don't have the inside cover on the vent.

I painted transparent Smoke Covers, white, because the sun was boring into the coach.  A couple of  coats from an aerisol can does the trick.  You get a translucent white that is darker where the paint paths overlap.  Light still gets through, but the sun does not bore into my eyeballs and the coach stays a little cooler.

We have  white Maxxair II over all the vents.  Best investment IMHO.   We leave them open, the vents, all the time - even when driving.
Very easy to install.

Many of the vent covers I've seen seem to collect and trap dirt, not only on the vent covers, but on the vent lid, inside and out.  How easy are these vent covers to remove for cleaning?

The Maxxair II have cotters on one side, and removable clips on the other, so they will pivot to one side for cleaning. Easy to do.

I added vent covers to ours a couple years ago. My main objectives were to protect the vent cover from more UV, and to let us keep a vent open in the rain. Both missions accomplished. BUT, I notice a significant reduction in airflow.  It is easy to open them up to clean under them when up top doing any maintenance. Not sure if I would add the cover again.  But I also have left it in place.

We put on the "new fan mate" model. Not even a month ago. I was sad that we could not get the old version of which there was one available in eBay for almost $300.

Anyway. The fan mate II is very thin and lightweight. It snaps together and has an optional bug screen  but it is flimsy and the plastic they use doesn't make great contact on the fan mate in a windy environment. I taped it on with fire and ice tape used to seal have ducts and swamp coolers.

It passes light very well. We went full bore and replaced the fans first for electric opening models which had smoke lids. Nice light through them both.

Back to wind. The max fan company went to the cotter pin mount. Very easy to remove and or pivot aside to clean dirt off. We are in the desert and dirt us incessant and insidious.  So it is nice to open lid on under ten seconds clean and return to service just as easily. I hated how much the wind lifted the cover off the deck and rattled. The fan itself has molded pin recepticals which are very large and allows the entire construction lots of play. . Packed the gaps under the cotter pins with rubber door seal and it's just fine!!!  Also comes with better looking steel brackets which would eliminate the issue when installing on an FF.

GOOD LUCK.

I just installed a Fantastic Fan vent cover (white) over the FF in the rear lounge on my MB.  Normally you would remove 4 of the screws to attach 4 brackets which have pins for easy removal and cleaning but since LD uses small hex head screws I just used 4 new SS screws to install the brackets.  The hex head screws didn't have enough exposed to unscrew easily.  I've used the FF vent covers before and was pleased.  A bit more money but nice covers.
