I would be afraid to hide a spare key in the false spare tire storage place. if someone were going to try to steal the tire and they discovered the key in the process, they would have a very easy entry into the inside of the coach.

Locking compartment key carefully duct taped inside tire compartment. Then door key hidden in one of the locking compartments.

Hi Monica. You could hide a CH751 key under the spare tire cover, even with a tire there. Then if you got locked out, and could find a wrench to undo the tire cover, you could use the 'universal' compartment key to unlock a compartment. Inside your specially chosen compartment you could have a pushbutton combination key safe      Kidde Permanent 5-Key Box with Pushbutton Combination Lock, Titanium-001015...     
   
I'm sure the Titanium refers to the color. The compartment keys aren't secure either. I have one of these located somewhere under my motorhome so I only have to remember the combination. It is well hidden under a layer of road grime. Not sure how I would open the tire compartment bare handed. Unfortunately I have needed this key once when I was in a gas station parking lot, with the engine running, blocking the driveway. GOAL (get out and look) best done without locking the door! RonB

While we leave that space a void during our usual 7-month rambles, it would be a great spot to put out-of-season items, like some winter jackets and sweaters, or extra blankets, sealed in those vacuum bags.  Out of the way, but handy enough.

I agree with Monica...

I have a safe box, approx. 8" X 12" X 4", that is bolted down inside an interior closet. Even Canadian Customs didn't want to deal with it.  :D

Two solutions that don't involve any gyrations come easily to mind  . . .

Do you have a set of "things" that you carry in your pockets on a routine basis?  I do - in addition to the keys du jour, I have a small rule, nail clippers, and a slide-out slitter for cutting tape/boxes.  I think I will add a key to the door of our Lazy Daze to this pile of things that go into my pocket as I walk out the door.  Thus even if the set of keys in use is inadvertently misplaced/lost/left in the ignition and the doors are locked (ahem), it would be easy enough to retrieve the spare key from one's pocket, open the door to the rig, and step inside.

Another solution is to put a key to one's rig (and possibly the home front door) key(s) on a chain and keep it around one's neck, or on a lanyard attached to your belt, but obviously separate from your main key ring.

The two-step, longer retrieval solution is good, too, but the ubiquitousness nature of the outside storage bin key makes this a less-desirable solution.

We don't store anything in that space on our MB since I don't think it's water proof nor strong enough to support anything other than air.  On the other hand, we sometimes we store a bit of dirt which seems to work it's way into that space.

Our spare tire cover is also busily attending to the business of storing a **spare tire**, but I wouldn't hesitate to store hermetically sealed containers in there with lightweight items in them.  It's not clear that a spare tire holder that is not meant to hold a spare tire might be built less hearty than one that accepts a real-live tire, but if they are equal, then it should be safe to put more than air and dirt in there - weight wise.  I'm not clear what I might put in there, though.  ?Extra hoses or cables?
