A new voice for DaVee
Sitting at the Crutchfield store in Charlottesville waiting to have a new  pioneer radio installed.

I have been looking at the Crutchfield web site for a new receiver for our MidBath.   On a recent visit  to visit my daughter in Charlottesville, VA I saw a storefront and wherehouse with the Crutchfield logo. Turns out C-ville is the national HQ for them.
I purchased a Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX. Key features I was looking for was screen size and wireless Appleplay. Apple play will take a map showing on my I phone and display it on the receiver’s face.  It also will play music stored on the phone as well as connect hands free to the cell phone.  There is a lip on the back side of the dash to be trimmed. The estimate was 3 hours labor.

Anyone want the old head unit?  I have the instructions that came with it in my LD packet.

Plus it supports dual backup cameras. Perhaps one for long-range view and one for trailer hitching, if needed...
Sadly, I'm in 1.5 DIN land with my 2000... and uninterested in surgery.

That's a single-DIN unit, right, John? I'd love to replace the low-end Clarion unit in my Airstream with one that has wireless Apple CarPlay--that way I could completely control the music from my iPhone, which lives in my shirt pocket. But seven hundred bucks is more than I'm willing to lay out right now, and I don't see anything at Crutchfield for less. Lots of units do CarPlay, but most require a USB connection. Guess I'll have to wait until the wireless version of this feature becomes more common, and prices come down.

Andy, it is a double din unit and a big one at that.  The tech who worked on my rig during the estimate review/site survey said that with e450s on the back side of the dash there is a lip that needed to be cut or trimmed for the unit to fit.  The finished product looks very nice.   A key like is that it is easy to use on the road.   Incoming calls are a snap.  The unit came with a microphone so the iPhone can be in another part of the RV charging and I still have hands free comms.  I was as far back as the fridge when talking on a call, the rv was in a parking lot,  and my sister had no issues with reception.   It was only after that call I saw the tech installed the mike in front of the speedo-meter.
I briefly had WAZE maping on the screen but in pushing buttons I lost the basic settings and am in the process of learning how to program the unit. There is a learning curve with smart toys.

If anyone is about to order a unit from Crutchfield I would like to pass this guys name along. They work commission. I don’t know if he can collect the commission on phone orders or not but I am very happy with the process.  The estimate was spot on, the work exceeded  my expections, the sales guy was  patient with my discription of what I wanted and showed me several receivers that I could further research.   The purchase was a three meeting todo.  I had done some research and knew some things I wanted but needed to see the product that met my minimums.  This could be done on the phone or on line.   The second meeting was a site survey where the tech and the sales guy looked at the rv.  This was important to me as I wanted a system could easily have cameras and better speakers added later.  With the unit I picked the camera(s) and speakers are easily added so therr is no cost benifit to doing everything at once instead of in installements.   Of course a  cynical person could say that is because they are overcharging me from the get go.  But I am a little car savvy if not as tool literate as I was in my youth.  50 years ago I installed my car electronics and almost never let out the smoke.  (Things only go wrong when you let out the smoke.) Now I let the pros do it.

I know only too well!

"it is a double din unit and a big one at that."

Shucks. The space in my Airstream's upper cabinet will only hold a single DIN unit.

John,

What good fortune to be in an area where you can go to the Crutchfield Store!  I have researched and purchased from them online for many years.  It has always been a good experience for me.  Nice to know that the experience at a store is also very positive.  Next time I want to make a change to my sound system (maybe sooner than I planned), I know where I need to go.  Thanks for sharing your satisfaction with their work.

"Of course a  cynical person could say that is because they are overcharging me from the get go."  No cynic here. They seem to have invested the time and trouble to make sure they sold you what you wanted, and helped you plan for additions in the future.  That's the kind of support I think we all appreciate and hope for when we need help.  I have no problem paying a fair 'premium' for that sort of service.
