Rear skirts
What is the proper way to attach rear skirts to the body?  I looked at one where the body fiberglass had shoddy holes drilled in a spot where the skirt did not even have a hole.  The opposite side had skirt screws in that spot.  The screws that were holding the skirts on, did not look like they were the ones intended.  Any advice?

I think you call them wheel covers.  Back in the 50's they were skirts

My 96 had the old style hold down for the tire skirts.
I had one break around the mounting point and after a few attempts at making it work with body washers
but couldn't. It finally broke too much to continue to use. I ordered a replacement from the
Mothership and at the same time got the mounting stuff that is used now. It was easy to make
work with just a drill and some patience aligning the holes.

Thanks.  That is helpful.  I wonder if I can get the mounting kit without the actual cover.  When you say mothership do you mean the LD factory, or is there aftermarket distributor that owners like?

Could you attach a photo of the wheel cover/shirt?  I'm betting someone tried to make a repair and it didn't turn out to be factory quality repair.

huenorth, I see by your bio that you have an '85, same year as my old one. I think I know what you are referring to.

Some of the old timers on the forum have owned similar models to yours so I'm sure you'll get some more answers to your question!

Yes, mothership refers to the LD factory. They may be able to help.

Thanks. I don't own it yet, but gave the owner some earnest money.  I am flying to Huntington Beach next week to take delivery.  The wheel covers are one of the things that concerned me...but not a deal breaker.  Meeting an inspector down there to look at everything before cutting the check.

Allen, LD factory and Mothership are one and the same.

Thank you.  The photo enlarged so I could see what you have.  The one I am looking at does not look like that.  I'll have to wait until I am down there to compare.

The bottom of the skirt curls around the body and there were studs sticking down
that the skirt slid into and then you put a body washer over that and a wingnut to secure it.
I saw my skirt flapping in the breeze one day and that is when I learned about changing over to the new style.
It has a hole in the side of the skirt that allows them to be more secure. As they age and rocks and other debris
gets thrown up, the old style mounts can have the plastic of the skirt break away and that makes securing them harder.
