Cost for new tires? New windshield?
Does anyone know approximately how much it would cost to buy all new tires for a LD?  To replace a windshield?

Thanks.

The only tires I will buy are Michelins. They cost about $1,700.
A windshield will be around $150.

Look at Firestone's  Transforce model, in my opinion just as good as Michelins-cheaper.  My are 5 years old, look great to include sidewalls.  Bad experience with Michelins blowout on an excellent tire and damage to LD.  Michelin paid for new set
but I went to Firestone instead-long story, just saying

You will find the majority of long time forum members running Michelin LTX M/S tires.
Over the last 160,000 miles, with two LDs, using Michelins, I have had one slow leak.
I do use a TPMS and often physically inspect the tires. I replace at the six year mark or slightly earlier, if leaving one a long trip.
I'm picky about tires and brakes and want the best combination of performance, safety and durability.
For the last ten years or so, Discount Tire has been our tire shop of choice due to their reasonable prices, friendly staff and easy warranty work, there are dealers all over the county.

Windshield prices vary.
I do like an 'at home' installation, so the windshield adhesive can cure overnight without any movement.
Windshields are glued into place with silicone RTV. It doesn't cure immediately, instead taking several hours to set.
The same can be done at a glass shop, if you leave your rig there overnight.

IMO, windshields are a wear item, something I plan on replacing every 6 years or so. Today's glass is much softer than the glass of decades ago and is easier to chip. Toad windshields are slowly sandblasted by the kicked up sand particles.
The softer glass is tempered so that it breaks into little pieces, instead of larger ones, for safety reasons .
If it hard to see through the windshield, when driving into the morning or afternoon sun, it may be suffering from thousands of tiny chips and be in need of replacement.
It's alway such a pleasure to drive with a new windshield.

Thank you everyone.  There is a lazy daze for sale that I think is over priced and at that, it needs new tires all around and a new windshield.  1993, 23'  97000 miles and they say they might negotiate a little.  The prices seem to be all over the place.  I'm trying to get an idea of what I should spend so I don't get taken advantage of, but it's very difficult.  I've seen this same rig with fewer miles on it for 6K less.  Apparently it also needs a water pump, which has been purchased but not installed.  I know this is the wrong place for this topic, so I'll start another thread.

Thank you all for this great information.  Tires and brakes are so very important to me.  I want to be as safe as I can on the road, so I'm making a note of those Michelin LTX M/S tires.  Thank you.

I found a LD that I think is ok, but I also think it's overpriced on top of needing new tires, a water pump and new windshield.  What I appreciate though is, now I know what kind of tires to watch out for on the rigs.  If they're not good tires, I have to negotiate the price down so I can replace them, which I will probably do anyway.

Great information.  You guys are amazing.  Thank you.

A year ago I paid $1261 for 6 Michelin at Discount Tire. I have run that tire on trucks for years.

If a rig needs a new water pump but one has been bought and not installed, I would be skeptical about other deferred maintenance. (I read this as a new motor water pump, not a house water pump) There could be a reason, which would apply to other work.

I replied on your other thread too. You may  consider that you will need to put almost the equivalent of repurchase Price into a rig that old in upgrades, fixes, etc. Batteries, plumbing, belts, refrigerator, AC units (at that age there is no recharging). So yes, $14k is too much.

Yes, as Larry said, age affects all windshields. A new one is in order.

See how flexible the sellers are before making a lowball offer. No need to insult anyone.

When considering tires on a used RV, age is much more important than brand. If they're more than five to six years old, they should be replaced regardless of how good the tread looks or what brand they are.

We too need a new windshield.

Just a note- Safelite is owns a big glass manufacturer. They like to use their own glass. It is just as clear as OEM, but not as thick. Nor as costly. Sometimes it has occlusions. If so, they will replace it. They are conscientious at the warehouse to inspect all glass before shopping to the install crew. But who wants to go through that?

The installers don't enjoy Class Cs but experienced ones have no problem with them.

I would probably go with their brand, knowing it is a consumable item, not an investment.

If the seller doesn't have the paperwork, how can I tell how old the tires are?

Thank you.

This is good advice and not something I would have thought to do.  Thank you so much.

I don't think I'd even know where to start because I don't know what's wrong with the rig.  I've seen prices all over the map for comparable rigs.  It doesn't seem like there is a pricing standard for older rigs.  I've been using Chris's price guide, but what do you do when someone is asking far more than the guide suggests?  In addition, it feels like I should have an inspection before making an offer on a rig because, I'm so clueless, I just don't know where to start beyond Chris's price guide.  I don't want to insult anyone, but I don't want to be caught unaware with issues either.

Thanks...

"If the seller doesn't have the paperwork, how can I tell how old the tires are?"

Read the date codes on the tires.

Thanks Andy!  Before I buy a rig and before I get it inspected, I will be armed with your guide for my first look.  I know I'll need your guide in order to determine whether or not it's worth the expense of having a rig inspected.
