We're tied at 3-3 in the dog house removal "poll". Someone care to break the tie? Maybe the new rules were written in above-8th-grade level English.

I just had my smog check done yesterday and they did not remove the dog house. The first time I used them they did but not since (this was the fourth time using them).

If you are in the Inland Empire, Norco, Corona, Ontario, Riverside this place is located:

Ace Smog Center #2
2957 Hamner Ave
Norco, CA 92860
951-734-5322

They charged me $82.00

I had a smog done two days ago (2008 RB) in the SF Bay Area and they did require doghouse removal. They also wanted to charge $25 for the removal, so I did it myself.

4-4 tie.

Andrew, I'm surprised at this; AFAIK, there is no CA law that requires removal of the doghouse for your model year (or mine, which is older).

I've had my rig smogged at Accurate Smog Check (aka "Family Smog" in Campbell) for the past three checks - the latest in 2015 for the 2016 registration - and the doghouse has not been removed.

I'd suggest that those who need a smog certificate call around to a few local-to-them places, not only to find out if the shop smogs RVs at all, but what access restrictions there might be, any available coupons, and if the shop "requires" that the doghouse be removed. The $25 fee that your shop wanted to charge suggests to me that "doghouse removal" is a money-maker for the shop and not a CA DMV requirement.

I just smogged a1988 26 TK. They did not remove the cover.  I had to call 4 shops though.  They are looking for missing equipment.  Some think they have to dynomometer the monster, but I have had it done twice without the dynomometer.

When inspecting a California vehicle, after the VIN has been inputed, the computer provides a list of devices that the tech is suppose to check for their presence.  Some engines have items that can only be inspected after removing the doghouse. The V10s do not have this issue.
Most Class Cs are too heavy for the dyno test and only require a tail pipe test, along with a code free computer.

Recent Cal smog regulations have eliminated the dyno and tail pipe test for 2000 and newer vehicles with GVWs less than 14,000-lbs.
The new test uses the OBDII port as an access point to examine the computer for codes, faults or monitors that have not reset.
A good, handheld scanner can tell you if your vehicle will pass this part of the test.

Joan, I didn't have time that day to try and argue law with the young workers at the smog check shop, so I took the easy route and just removed the doghouse myself.

Great suggestions. My first stop was a shop I knew could do the inspection for a certain price (no doghouse removal fee), but their system was down that day and they could not perform the smog check. I then drove to a nearby shop that I had a coupon for, but they had recently stopped accepting RVs and even full-sized trucks. My 3rd stop was the shop with the $25 doghouse removal fee. I had used them several years ago and knew they had room to accommodate RVs. However, ownership had changed and the price had gone up significantly to $90. I told them the shop a mile away would do it for $60 including the certificate and they matched the price.
