Scan Gauge location October 19, 2016, 10:45:14 am I am going to purchase a scan gauge and want to know a location and method of securing. Amazon has a windshield holder for the gauge but I am unsure if that would work for me. What works for you. Thanks John
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #1 – October 19, 2016, 11:01:42 am I mounted mine to the upper part of the dash using heavy duty Velcro. It's within my vision just to the right of the steering wheel. One caveat however, if you are over the age of 40 and need eye glasses to view close-up objects, beware! I find the display is way too small to be seen unless I lean over and look through my bi-focals. In addition the colors and contrast are well below what I would deem optimum. That having been said, I find the device useful. I take particular delight, when I'm on a down grade with my foot off the accelerator, to see the fuel consumption go to 9999mpg. 1 Likes
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #2 – October 19, 2016, 11:10:33 am I place mine on the steeling column with Velcro. Wrap the connecting wire around the column so its not under foot.
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #3 – October 19, 2016, 11:11:13 am I have a dash cover, so Velcro doesn't stick. My low-tech "hold my beer" fix is to just plop the ScanGauge on a piece of rubber mesh shelf liner, and deal with frequent adjustments as the thing wanders around. I agree about the low contrast; I wear trifocals, and can see the display, but it would be a definite improvement if ScanGauge offered a slightly larger unit with higher contrast for old eyes!Joan

Wrap the connecting wire around the column so its not under foot. Ours ScanGauge is located in the same spot. It does blocks viewing the odometer and gear selector but is easier to see when mounted lower, compared to the top of the dash, where the background glare makes the gauge hard to read.Larry
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #5 – October 19, 2016, 04:09:14 pm I put mine at the far left of the dash, out of the way. Use 3M Dual Lock Velcro to keep it in place.I lead the cord through the factory pop-off cover that is close to the windshield. The power cord to the GPS also also exits through the same opening. Caveat. Take care that the cords can not wrap around the steering column by tying them back with quick ties. Don't ask me how I know that.

The ScanGauge display is hard to read, for all the reasons mentioned. That's the main reason why I switched to an UltraGauge. Its display has larger text, higher resolution (for sharper characters), and MUCH better contrast. For Ford-based rigs, you'll want the UltraGauge MX 1.3 model, which can display transmission temperature without resorting to obscure codes or special programming. Besides, it costs less than the ScanGauge, and can display up to eight parameters. I mounted mine on the dash just to the left of the steering wheel. 2 Likes
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #7 – October 20, 2016, 08:31:11 pm I bought a UltraGauge also and like the size of the information and the customization you get. I bought the suction holder that they sell for the unit and I attached it in May and it is still there now.. ~Liam 98 26.5 - MB
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #8 – October 20, 2016, 11:03:09 pm AndyOne thing I cannot find on their web-page are the dimensions... how wide and how tall is the UltraGauge???
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #9 – October 21, 2016, 10:55:49 am Andy,Here is a screen shoot of an eBay description of the Scan Guage 2.Hope this helps,KentBut then you are looking for the Ultra but all the ads so far don't mention a change in size whereas the size of the scan gauge 2 is stated to be 50 % larger than the original (or was that just the screen size that increased? I'll keep looking

Steve,Here's a couple of links from their "Manuals" section. UltraGauge MX 1.3 & EM v1.2 manual (Purchased on 10/12/12 or later. Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #11 – October 21, 2016, 11:39:37 am Steve, I believe the screen size on the ultragauge is 2.5"x4.0". I will be in my LD later today so I will measure it. Somehow I did not properly attach the photo here to this thread earlier so it is in the media section under group files under Ultra Gauge. You can see that I have the ultragauge attached to the windscreen with the suctioncup holder they sell for it. Unfortunately in the photo it was not on so you can see the character sizes but the engine needs to be on for it to function. ~Liam 98 26.5 - MB 1 Likes
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #12 – October 22, 2016, 12:42:12 am So the UltraGauge outside measurement is 3.5"x 2.2". The screen is about a quarter inch smaller on each side. And yes the UltraGauge does have a Transmission temp indicator that works for my 1998 V10. Hope this helps ~Liam 98 26.5 - MB
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #13 – November 10, 2016, 03:41:54 pm Thanks to all who responded...I have removed my Scan Gauge II in lieu of the Ultra Gauge. I mounted it on the dash just above and to the left of the upper power point. Although the programming on the new unit has a somewhat steep learning curve I believe that I have mastered it, to the point where I have two pages complete with the gauges I wanted. However, and here's where I'm puzzled, a gauge that I did not request has somehow appeared and placed itself on page 2, zone 3. This un-asked for gauge has an abbreviation of: Trn °FIs this a Ford exclusive code and is it the nebulous Transmission Temp. that everyone seems to be seeking?

Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #15 – November 10, 2016, 05:32:30 pm "Gotta picture?"Beyond my tech capabilities at this time... however, I used their 'Vertical' mount and that placed it just behind the shift lever when in Park. Once you engage the other gears the lever is well below and the Ultra Gauge is out in the open.
Re: Scan Gauge location Reply #16 – November 10, 2016, 06:02:51 pm Yup, that's transmission temperature. :-)
