Smokemap has changed
Not sure if this is he right forum, so here goes...
Andy has put me on to using the Wundergound smoke map, at this link. But I find it no longer works as before.

I looked around, and there are a couple of alternatives, including this one from the National Weather Service. NASA also had a page showing fires, but it looked too much like a worldwide holocost to be of much use.

Has anyone else found another source to show smoke?

BTW, Inciweb still works well to show burn locations.

Steve, thanks, I might be missing something, but that seems redundant to Inciweb, showing fire location.  The old SmokeMap showed the smoke coverage, so we could see what the air quality would be based on wind conditions. I'll put GeoMac on my bookmark page too though.

Wunderground's smoke map currently brings up a map showing some fires, plus a message that they are working on improvements and expect to restore full functionality soon. Meanwhile, InciWeb seems to be the most authoritative source. NOAA's graphical map is useful for many things, but unfortunately its map is inferior in both resolution and ease of navigation to the Google-based services such as Wunderground.

Paul and Andy,

InciWeb is a super resource. Thanks.

My father was a Captain  on the L.A. County Fire Department for thirty years. He knew only to well the devastation fires can cause.

Fires are terrifying beasts. The cause of a fire is often more horrifying. The loss of life and property sickens me.

The resources you provided gives me a clearer view of where the current fires are active in San Bernardino. Big Bear Lake is in the S.B. Forest and is apparently isolated from the fires in the area.

I have been keeping a close eye on fire activities in the area as I will be heading up to Big Bear on Monday morning, hopefully.

My prayers always go out to the Fire Fighters who risk their lives to protect us every day.

Thanks again,

Kent

Thanks for noting that Andy, I clicked through the splash message, natural, so put myself in the dark about the impending fixes. I hope they are back soon.

Not exactly what you are looking for but you might check out AirNow.  The site gives air quality index and can be searched by location (zip code).  Also has an interactive map.  Hope this helps some

Thanks CLBJEK, that is a better map than the one I linked to above from the NWS. Still hoping Wunderground puts Smokemap back up, it was the best I've seen so far.  In the meantime, this will do nicely. Bookmarked!
