Jo,

My 2003 had similar issues with the generator cutting out periodically.  I traced it to the fuel line.

If yours is anything like mine, the generator fuel line is clear tubing that runs through some corrugated tubing for abrasion protection (if I recall correctly).  My generator fuel line had gotten hard and brittle, and developed several hairline cracks.  I ran 20-25 feet of 1/4" ID rubber fuel line alongside the old line and plugged it in to the gas tank/generator.  Dropping the fuel tank to access the pickup tube was the hardest part.

This was a couple years ago, and it's been running great since.

My generator does that occasionally and what always clears it up is to turn the altitude adjustment screw back and forth a couple times while it running. It will smooth out and run for hours.  I haven't tore the carburetor apart to see if I can pinpoint the source of the problem. When it starts surging  while pouring rain outside I do wish I had actually fixed it.

I also replaced the entire fuel line to the generator... although in my case it was with Stainless Steel and not rubber. Cheap insurance!   ;)
