Yosemite Slammed
I don't think there is anything in this article (WSJ Aug 4 2016) that will surprise this group but it is an interesting read.

Yosemite Slammed: Record Crowds Make America’s National Parks Hard to Bear - WSJ

The article is "spot on", with a little imagination it isn't that difficult to find solitude when that is what the soul needs!

(Hint: Heading to a National Park may not be the answer*)

*exception: Minnesota Voyageur's NP which is empty.

Now that we are at an age where we have options, we opt to not be at a major national park when school is out.
Planning a post Labor Day trip.

After last year's trip to Yellowstone, I could have written the article. Even after Labor Day, the park was packed. On a future trip, I'd stay in one of the NFS CG on the road between Cody and the East gate. (There were many, a couple with power). There would be some driving involved for day trips,
but still a better option in my opinion than crowded $50/night CG inside the official park boundaries.)

Just returned from France. The news, almost every night, was featuring stories about the collapse of tourism. Especially from Japan and the USA. Now we know where they all went!

Oh the simple pleasures of getting older. My Senior Pass gets me on the Valley floor for $15 a night (unless prices have changed since March).

Regarding the crowds...Oh they are there during peak season, but you won't find me at Disneyland during that time of year either.

A few years ago, my daughter and I were staying at Curry Village during our annual migration. Bad planning on my part as our stay overlapped  Labor Day. The shuttles were indeed packed.

One gentleman commented that (in standing room only) the shuttle reminded him of buses in South America.

From that day on, our trips avoided Labor Day in the Valley. Personally, I prefer March and April. Beautiful weather and crowds are greatly reduced. Easter week attracts numerous campers, but far fewer than the summer throngs.

Heading back next March with my DW. As always, I can't wait.

Similar to real estate, when camping in National Parks, it's all about location . . . and timing. Avoiding holidays, weekends, and the summer vacation period really makes a difference. Now if you want solitude, I heartily recommend Great Basin NP in eastern Nevada. We were camping there in early May of 2015 and had trouble finding anyone else in our campground. How uncrowded was it? Check out the photo of my wife below! Our campground was right on a stream.
