U.S. Gas Prices Graphic
My view is that gas costs what it costs where and when one needs it, so regional price comparisons aren't an issue for me. However, I know that, for their own reasons, many people do keep a close watch on gas prices, so the graphic at this link might be of interest to some.

Yesterday we paid $1.76 per gallon at Costco and then we get 4% off that price which is a Costco Visa benefit.  That price is our lowest from many months in this area, but more than we paid at the low water mark about a year ago at $1.49.  I pumped gas in Laredo, Texas in 1963 for $.17 per gallon and earned $5.00 for working from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm.  That $5.00 lasted me all week to include gas for my '54 Ford and a movie-dinner date.

A fellow that I worked with in Minnesota picked carrots during that same time (60's) for $.05 a hour.  He and his brother worked and saved their wages the entire summer so that they could buy a bike, which they shared with each other.  He told me that their father thought both of them were wasteful by spending hard-earned money on a bike!

And so it goes.

Inflation is a miracle of modern government. In terms of generations, it took only 1 to come to expect it. This long lasting fuel cost reduction is certainly an amazing windfall that we do our best to take advantage of.  But Joan has it about right, it's one of those things we accept for what they are.

I am planning the route for this fall to go east. Canada was considered. Then I thought about fuel expense. This map actually came in handy to guide journey plan, just select the Canada map- we will be staying south of the border until Sault Ste Marie, then a quick dash across Ontario to Niagara, and back to the USA. Proving I will pay extra to avoid SE Michigan, and my hometown.

Good chart. It's the old "Nickle candy bar" story. Bottom line: these are good times for us RV'ers.

Interesting chart indeed! Once the Standard Oil monopoly was broken up, you could argue that the oil market is similar to an international free market. Lots of shocks, lots of reactions in the last hundred years. It would be interesting to couple this with MPG data for an inflation adjusted cost per mile.

Thanks Art, I shoulda known such a chart would be on Professor Peery's blog- I follow him! Imagine, cost per mile 28% lower than in 1980. So at 8 MPG, I'm about even with whatever horrible piece of junk I was driving in 1980 (oh, I remember now, it was a 1975 Galaxy 500 with no rear springs and windshield wipers on a rope)

Like a whole parcel of things inflation/deflation is not a simple yin/yang sort of thing.   For instance as a deep in debt young man supporting a family I loved inflation because it allowed me to borrow expensive dollars and pay back cheap dollars.  As a retired old debt free gray muzzled dude I hate inflation because I live on a fixed income.  Inflation causes me to lose my hard earned dollars to 'irresponsible' young folk taken on more debt then they should .......  oh how the wheel has turned.
