Next Jeep might make a nice toad
the car mags are talking more about the next Jeep to replace the current Wrangler.  Sounds like the owners of the brand want it to be much lighter and more aerodynamic (mostly tilting the windshield more).  If it retains something similar to the current transfer case so a true neutral is available it could make a nice toad.  With a 8 speed auto trans it should not need a high low range, but off roaders like a power take off for stuff so maybe there is hope for a transfer case or a neutral of some kind that will allow towing.  The article mentions a tilted windshield, that should be less prone to cracking from flying rocks.
Traditional Jeep lovers will hate it.  I had a early 87 YJ and remember being told that it wasn't a "real jeep" by the CJ owners who  got stuck on the way back to where I was (ya - stuck).  Here is a link.

Reading the long article at Allpars, pertaining to the new Wrangler, I found some bad news.

"How much lighter and more economical will the 2018 Wrangler be?
The short answer: The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will probably weigh around 300 pounds more at curb weight than the current model, and achieve around 3-4 mpg more on the highway if they use the current V6.
The weight gain will be due to previously noted rollover strength, mediated by greater use of aluminum in the body. There are also safety tests, planned or existing, from both private industry and government, which did not exist when the current Wrangler was first engineered; achieving high ratings for these will drive weight up"
2018 Jeep Wrangler: Still steel, still capable after all these years

The existing 2016 Wrangler, equipped with the hardtop most eventually install, is already overweight and exceeds the bumper's towing capacity.  The 300 extra pounds only adds to the problem, plus there is the added weight of the survival and recovery gear that should be carried when venturing far off road.

I was hoping for a smaller, lighter Wrangler but it is't going to happen. Looks like our Jeep Cherokee will be in action for many more years.
The good news is that the Wrangler will still be a real American designed Jeep and not a Italian Fiat Renegade or Alfa Romero Cherokee.
