Shower skylight dome
So, I'm on the roof of the new to us 1994 26 1/2' mid bath motor home and I notice the plastic skylight over the shower is cracked. Not necessarily wanting to replace the whole thing I called the factory and got a fella named Todd. I asked after a replacement cap and he abruptly informed me that I was basically SOL and would have to go the after market route without any conversation about the correct approach.

I see over on Roger's ramblings that he replaced one and posted pictures, his does look exactly like mine just not as old.

So do I ask for someone else with maybe more expertise? Has anyone else encountered a fix for the skylight on an older unit?

My first dealings with the factory, I could be more impressed.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

Same for 1988 MB.  One option is to order an escape  hatch cover the same size and brand and retrofit it.  I bought a garnish and dome, but have opted against that in favor of the escape hatch cover route.  I just have to implement my new choice.

I went and checked the escape hatch cover, I think you are on to something. Not every where has them though.  Parts stores in the Arizona area have some to choose from.

"..and got a fella named Todd."

And therein lies the problem... you got the wrong fella!

Call back and insist on talking to Vince. Those shower skylight domes are readily available. I had LD replace the one on my '04 30'IB. So far as I know they are all the same, unless the '94 was a different size.   ::)

Mine looks exactly like yours in the link as a matter of fact, I had your pictures up when I called them. My plastic cap measures 22" X 22" and the inside aluminum frame measures about 20" X 20". I can see where they originally shimmed it about 2" ,one inch on the front and one inch on the rear to make it fit the 22" cap. I'm gonna call them back, I hate aftermarket modifications.

Thanks,

A little update on this, called back to the factory and in fact spoke with Vince. He says that between the 1994 model and later years they changed sizes and what is made today will not fit. So I'm back to the escape hatch cap but finding one that will give dimensions of their product is near impossible. I don't really want the whole assembly but just the cap. I hope I find one before the calk deteriorates.....

Replacement plastic covers are available in various sizes.
RV Skylight Domes | Replacement Lexan Domes | ICON Technologies Limited
RV Skylight | Roof Dome | SL2222
Skylight - Outer - Skylights - Hardware

Chopping a larger hole for an escape hatch is a risky proposition, I would prefer to use the existing hole and build a new one or rebuild the existing cover.
Post up a few pics for us to see what has changed .

The sky lights in reply #9 is the first thing I purchased in reply #1.  The short coming is the shower stall will be 4" shorter.  I am 6' 5" and I need all 6" of the shower dome sky light to stand in the shower.  A tall (6")  garnish will require a 3" stacked wooden  frame around the opening to maintain the existing height.  I saw a great amount of work and a great chance for water leaking in from Lake Newton. Hence this is why I say buy a new escape hatch dome and retro fit.

My sky dome is available in San Jose. Drop me a message.

Looking at the dimensions listed for the older LD. I am thinking the problem with the newer skylight like I bought. Is the rubber gasket won’t seal on the smaller frame. My inside dimension is 21.5” square. The new skylight has shims on the sides about 1/2” on each side. No skins on the front and back. Fits ever tight and even had to carefully bend the frame to get it to drop in place.

Here's a couple pictures of my opening. I have no intention of tearing out existing flashing. Mine measures 20 X 20 on the seal area. I did find a replacement exit cap that is very close to my dimensions it's manufactured by some outfit called Heng inc. I
don't know anything about them but an RV store in California stocks the replacement cap and it measures 22 X 22 on the outside same as mine.  It's nearly impossible to find anyone who does dimensions like the one image.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.

Our son had one made for his airstream. Go to maximskylights.com and they will tell you the measurements they need, etc.
