Blue smoke on start up March 18, 2017, 11:25:57 pm Hi All. We have a 2008 24' FD with the V10. It has about 27,000 miles on it. We've owned it since new. Once in a while upon starting the engine I see a puff of blue smoke. It doesn't continue after the initial start up. My mechanical experience is primarily with 60s Chevy V8s and VWs. I've built a few engines and generally know my way around automotive systems. This issue makes me suspect valve stem seals, but I'd like to hear from any Ford V10 wizards if there's something that typically causes this symptom with this engine. Thank you.Larry in Monument, CO
Re: Blue smoke on start up Reply #1 – March 19, 2017, 08:09:56 am How is the oil consumption? Ford did have a couple of years with valve seal issues. Friends of ours finally got Ford to replace their V-10 's valve seals because of excessive oil usage (under warranty I think).Art

I've timed out on warranty, but I'll try to find out if my year was under any service advisories. Our 1988 Suburban needed valve stem seals early on in its life. Re: Blue smoke on start up Reply #3 – March 20, 2017, 09:15:24 am When I had that problem with my Camry, I went on YouTube for the answer, and it wasn't the leaking valves I thought was: it was the PCV valve - easily changed, and a few weeks, the smoke on startup was gone entirely. Try YouTube, and maybe you'll get lucky, too!

Re: Blue smoke on start up Reply #5 – April 15, 2017, 04:16:27 pm Well, I finally had the time to replace the PCV valve. The hardest part about the job is removing and replacing the engine shroud in the cab. The old valve seemed a little sticky, and there was definitely oil in the tube. I let it sit overnight and on startup today there was no cloud of blue smoke. Motorcraft part number EV 279. It's an electric PCV valve. I got it at Rock Auto for about $25.00 incl shipping.
