We're reviewing some of the routes between Sheridan and Cody WY and reading the Wyoming Highway Department's warnings if driving on highways 14A, 14, or 16 (8% to 10% grades). Frankly, I don't see anything like a direct route from Sheridan to Cody. We'd certainly be grateful for some route guidance.

Ed and Margee, I grew-up in this area and if you have the time, I'd recommend going to Buffalo and take Hwy. 16 though the Big Horn mountains. Camping around Meadowlark Lake area is very good. Go to Tensleep and take Hwy. 31 to Manderson. After Manderson, Take Hwy. 16 to Greybull and then 14 into Cody. In my opinion, this is a nice little slice of Wyoming without the crowds or the wind!!

Depending on your stomach for adventure, you might want to avoid 14A.

Going west out of Ranchester, at the point where US-14 and US-14A divide, US-14A goes over Bald Mountain and down what the locals call the “Oh My God Hill!”. The descent is posted at 10% for 10 miles, but there is an additional 4 miles of 8%. By comparison, the grades on US-14 range from 5-7%.

If you do not already have the Mountain Directory West (Mountain Directory for Truckers, RV, and Motorhome Drivers), I advise either ordering it from many online retailers, or going to their website and downloading 1) An app for either android phones or iPhones/iPads, or 2) The ebook for Windows computers. You can then read about each of these roads and decide which one you want to take.

We drove US-14A many, many years ago and it was an absolutely beautiful drive. But we were in a car, not an RV!

I can't tell you how much we appreciate this very helpful information! It's now our plan so thank you very much.

I've drove HWY 14 from Cody to Sheridan three times, and would go out of my way to drive it again. Particularly like the National Forest campground Tie Flume, but the whole drive is scenic. Would highly recommend the drive over the Big Horn mountains, and staying a night or two along the way.

No grades were particularly bothersome, but I am comfortable with mountain RV driving. I just take my time up and down.

Hello Dave. We just finished looking at photos of TIe Flume ... what a gem! So now we're trying to figure out how to camp there for at least a few days. Thank you for your suggestion and guidance. Btw, we have the Mountain Directory West for Truckers, RV, and MH Drivers, which we haven't needed during our trips to Oklahoma and around Texas! No doubt, we'll need it in the next few weeks. Take care and thanks again.

My pleasure Ed.

I just did a google of "Tie Flume Campground" and looked at the images. Was surprised that the 5th image was of my boys playing in the South Tongue River that runs by the campground, taken in 2006, on our second trek across the Big Horn mountains.

Missing from those pictures is my favorite from a short morning hike.

Really was a stumbled upon place, in 2004 we had stayed at a great small campground, Owen Creek, and were planning on staying there in 2006. But when we got there, the campground had been clear cut (disease). So we traveled up the road a bit to Tie Flume, much further off HWY 14, but well worth the extra miles.

Envious of your upcoming visit to the region. Planning to explore the region even more in August 2017, as part of my 6th road trip to Yellowstone.
