silver paint

I have a 2003 RB, white and silver. The silver paint appears to be a matte finish, not the high shine of the white aluminum. Was it meant to be matte from day One? I had a RV detail shop wash and "wax" my unit and they made a real mess of the silver by not wiping off the wax they used in many spots. Should I be able to bring the silver to a high gloss like the white? Anyone else have this problem?

Mary, you will very likely get some input from "silver" LD owners, but the silver and red paint jobs fade and oxidize sooner and to greater degree than the other colors. I don't know how well the "silver" of the newer model years/ "modern" paint scheme hold up compared to the older/traditional paint, but almost every silver paint job on traditional paint jobs I've seen is a "matte" finish, even on a well-cared for rig.

It may well be that the detail shop used inappropriate products and/or did a sloppy job on your rig and exacerbated the "fade" problem, but I would expect a 13-year-old silver LD to have oxidized, "matte" paint to some degree.

Mary, you posted a similar questionlast October.

My 2003 silver LD has not faded, but to my recollection, the silver paint has always had more of a glow than a deep shine.

If you were to look at two cars side by side, and one was a freshly polished black and the other a silver or gold metalic paint, the light metallic color would probably not have the deep shine of the dark color either.

Your paint might have oxidized more if it was kept in a bright and hot climate, hard to tell without seeing it. Have you compared it to other silver LD's? You might also compare your exposed paint to the paint behind the spare tire cover which has not been constantly exposed.

Good luck, Steve K.
