Toilet Repair

I have a hunch I know the answer to this question, but it's worth a try: the spring that returns the pedal has broken on our Sealand Traveler toilet so we have to manually pull the lever back up. I have a replacement spring valve assembly - the question is - can I replace it without having to remove the toilet? My fear is that when I remove the long mounting screws for the assembly the ball will come loose and fall into the tank. Definitely not a good thing. Advice would be welcome. Thanks

Ted-

I replaced the valve on our Sealand Traveler 511. I had the bowl off, but that was all. I don't seem to remember any special precautions needed to prevent the ball from falling into the tank. I do remember old valve coming apart on disassembly such that I couldn't figure out how the bolts went back in. I eventually reassembled it correctly.

While I was at it, I replaced the ball, seals and vacuum breaker. By the records, the toilet hadn't received maintenance like that since it was built 18 years before.
