Propane Tank April 15, 2014, 07:53:55 pm Yahoo Message Number: 145765I went to fill the tank but was not successful. The operator told me they are not allowed to fill any tanks over 12 years and that I needed to get it tested and recertified. He was not sure if this was a policy or a new law nor did he know where I might get the new certification.. I have not heard of any such new law here in Calif. Has anyone else run into this problem? I'm hoping this is only a local policy of this station.John E. Erlinger San Juan Capistrano 949 496-7450

Re: Propane Tank Reply #2 – April 15, 2014, 08:49:47 pm Yahoo Message Number: 145768Is this a vertical DOT tank or horizontal ASME one? I know the DOT tanks DO need to be re-certified, and will need an OPD valve to pass. I replaced the tank valve in our '83, cleaned off any rust, and repainted. Then I took it to U-Haul, who is able to purge, refill, and re-certify the tank.Steve
Re: Propane Tank Reply #3 – April 15, 2014, 09:11:47 pm Yahoo Message Number: 145769DOT propane tanks (ASME tanks are exempt from this requirement) have to be recertified 12 years from date of manufacture and every 5 years thereafter. You might want to do a search for propane *suppliers* in your area; they should be able to do the recertification.Joan
Re: Propane Tank Reply #4 – April 15, 2014, 10:42:47 pm Yahoo Message Number: 145770For what it's worth, Lazy Daze used removable 40-pound vertical DOT* tanks (essentially giant barbecue tanks) at least through 1985, but switched to permanently mounted horizontal ASME**tanks in the late 80s, as I recall. As others have said, DOT tanks need to be recertified periodically, and this is a national requirement. ASME tanks don't need to be recertified. Can anyone pinpoint the year of the switch? I'd like to add the information to the LD Pocket Guide's "Changes" section.* [US] Department of Transportation ** American Society of Mechanical EngineersAndy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels 1 Likes

Go to one of the palces that do exchange for a full tank. Two weeks ago I took my old 2000 tank to Wal-Mart and got a full tank. I looked for a new tank in the cage. The one that I got was an April 2013 built tank. This tank will be good for another 11 years. I have 5 more tanks that I need to get exchanged. They are all at least 2001 or older. When the next goes empty I will do an exchange and then have it refilled after that.

The link doesn't work for me either because that folder has been moved or deleted. I'd like to suggest you post your question in the Lazy Daze Technical because more people will see it. The Yahoo Archive doesn't get much action. Hope this helps. 1 Likes

Actually, the Yahoo Archive is just an archive, not a discussion board. It's the preservation of the posts made on that board before the transition to the new site. 1 Likes
