I got this idea from a fellow LD owner. He has a dash cam on all his vehicles that records, video and sound, of whatever happens in front of him. I thought it was a good idea and got two from Costco.

It's a COBRA CDR-840 $100.

That's not a bad deal. But if you are on a real tight budget, use your smart phone, or old smart phone you have sitting around collecting dust, and mount it to your windshield or dash. Get the app CaroO, a dash cam app. It records your location, speed, sound and many other things. It will even make an emergency phone call should it detect an accident. I also have a Bluetooth OBD II device that it can read and will display your engine info. The app is free, but they do have a pay version.

Don, how about a posting a report on how it works for you after you've tried it out for a while.

The app idea is good, seems a cheap small tablet would work.

Another idea is a cheap camera. I use a Nikon 7600 that uses rechargeable AA batteries. With a dashboard mount.

FYI the Costco cameras are battery powered. Better cameras use capacitors, they are less heat sensitive.

A lot of these things have GPS, make sure you can turn it off. If you are doing 36 mph in a 35 zone and someone hits you, you will be partially at fault.

That's not a bad deal. But if you are on a real tight budget, use your smart phone, or old smart phone Victor

Good point Roger. The app I mentioned allows you to turn off speed data, actually it is off by default. It's very easy to define what you want it to record.

We have been using the COBRA CDR-840, purchased from COSTCO, for the past 4 months and are pleased with the unit. When parked or stored, we merely unplug it from the cigarette lighter so as to not drain the battery. Once plugged in, it remembers my previous settings. We're pleased with the unit. Having worked in the insurance industry for the past 30 years and watching the general careless disregard of some of our fellow drivers while on the road this unit seemed like cheap insurance against the unexpected. Just my 2 cents.

I'm using it on android, I don't know if it's available on iPhones. But I'm sure there are similar apps there. Just do a search for dash cam.

There is a free app for iPhones called DashCam. My first inclination is the field of view doesn't take into account peripheral vision. Maybe you do truly get what you pay for sometimes. For me I'll keep looking for a dedicated DashCam with at least a 180 degree field of view or greater if one exists. Want to make sure the red light runners are captured on video before I get T boned!

Curtis,

Thank you for you two cents worth. On both of my last two trips, I've been cut off by impatient drivers that were barely by me when they pulled in front of me on the interstate. Had they clipped my bumper and lost control, I'm sure I'd have been at fault if I piled into them. I've been thinking about a dash cam ever since, but needed a recommendation. Yours is straightforward and just what I was waiting for.

I've read the mounting bracket is a bit difficult. Could you comment on how you've managed that please?

Bill, I too have been involved in several close calls while driving through no fault of my own. While driving our LD, my head is on a swivel and I have doubled the two second following rule to at least a four second following rule which unfortunately, also tempts drivers to pull into the space in front of me. At least with a dash cam, it helps establish fault. I figure that if this can help to eliminate my being wrongly considered at fault, the subsequent savings from not having my insurance premiums increased would easily pay for the dash cam.

The mounting bracket that came with the unit is a fairly straight forward articulated arm with suction type mounting bracket. It was easy to set up. We have our unit mounted on the windshield under the rear view mirror with easy access to the cigarette lighter. One could also mount the unit on a smooth part of the horizontal surface of the dashboard.

I hope that this is helpful.

I bought this combination GPS and dash cam. It also has a following too close alarm and wandering out of lane alarm.

The wander feature only works on solid lane stripes, which are usually only found on both sides of the road. It mounts by suction cup to the windshield. The unit has a magnetic attachment to the suction cup mount. So mounting is easy. You can put it on the left, right or center of the windshield. You have to do a small amount of aiming to make everything function correctly. Easy enough to do.

I have used the dash camera to transfer scenic views to my computer. I have a 32GB memory card, which holds about 4 hours of data. You just have to remember to transfer the footage you want to keep before it's recorded over.

Prior to buying the Garmin combo unit, I had a Rexing dash camera. It was easily mounted too, but it was mounted with double stick tape. It consisted of a mounting bracket and a separate camera unit. The camera slid off the mounting bracket easily. I had to mount the camera low to not catch the overhang of the LD in the field of vision and high enough to not see the windshield wipers. Position was easy enough to fine tune by holding the mount and camera in different spots and see what the camera was recording The Rexing was cheap with lotsa good reviews on Amazon and it took great video with some of them finding their way into my vacation videos.

I bought a new Garmin GPS because my OLD Garmin was having memory problems with the new updated maps. I thought combining camera and GPS on a 6" screen was easy on the eyes and only 1 unit instead of two.
