LD storage compartment dimensions

I'm researching LDs and am interested in storing an inflatable sailboat (Sea Eagle Paddleski with aftermarket sail kit.) The sailboat is in 2 bags: 4'x 1' x 1' and 4' x 2' x 1'. I'm guesstimating those measurements. Total weight of the 2 bags is about 100 lbs. The bags are squishy/not hard sided, but they don't squish all that much.

I'm wondering if there are schematics or dimensions of the storage areas available for the different floor plans? I have looked high and low, but can't find anything. I'm most interested in the 31' IB and the 27' MB floor plans. (I'd love the IB but I' m pretty sure the CCC is going to be a problem.)

Unfortunately, I have only seen 1 LD in my life. I live in New England, and they are rare in this neck of the woods. But the one i saw was a MB. Doesn't the 'tire cover' conceal a storage area, and might these bags fit in that area?

Will you be towing a car? If so, using the car trunk might work. If not, a cargo carrier attached to the trailer hitch would work. The weight you're talking about should be just fine on a carrier. I've used one on a MB for years with no problems.

I also had a cargo carrier on my hitch which worked great. There is no way you will be able to stow it inside. Be sure and buy a sturdy carrier. The other option would be to stow it on the roof. The current LD's don't have a guard rail but earlier ones do.

One thing to bear in mind is that the compartment portals are always smaller than the inside dimensions. Plan on carrying outside or in a toad.

Thanks, Steve. I also found Andy's meticulous measurements of the MB storage compartments, in the file section. Even if I could manage to 'stuff' it all in, I think the cargo carrier is the best solution for me.

Denise, as others have pointed out, the doors to those compartments are (unfortunately) smaller than the inside dimensions. The largest compartment in my 2003 midbath is under the forward dinette seat; its door opening is about 10" x 16" and the space is a little over three feet deep. Your boat will have to ride elsewhere. Hopefully a cargo carrier will be a good solution.

How about using the roof for storage? There is a lot of available space.
On our 23.5' FL, there is room for two 17' kayaks and 400-watts of solar.

Bumper trays are OK but the do stick out,  just about everyone of then I have seen, on the back of a LD, shows damage from being backed into once or more. It also readily exposes your gear to thieves.
A locking roof box may be a better choice.  Out of sight, out of mind.

Larry, thanks for your thoughts. I don't think I could lift a 60lb bag onto the roof. In fact, I will avoid the roof whenever possible, as I'm afraid of heights! Not kidding. Some RV shop is going to be getting extra business because of this fear of mine.

My other thought is to go for an IB. I just found a pic of its rear passthrough compartment, and it looks like it could handle the two bags.

Does anyone know if the 2 bags would both fit in the IB rear passthrough compartment? Again the bags are 4'x1'x1' and 4' x 2' x 1'.

Denise, I don't have exact measurements, but neither pass through door on the IB rear compartment is even close to 4'. More like max of 2' or so.

PS: The passenger side up front compartment on the IB might work if you could squish the bags a bit. My IB is in storage, but maybe someone with an IB could measure the door frame size and the compartment sized for you.

Chris, Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but these are long, fairly narrow bags. In width and depth they are: about 1 ft x 2 ft and the other is about 1ft x 1 ft. Both are about 4 ft long. All of these measurements are slight overestimations.

So if the rear passthrough compartment door is 2' x 1' or even slightly smaller, I should be able to get each bag through that opening, no? From my thinking, they both would fit through a 2' x 1' opening, and end to end their combined length would be (actually less than) 8 ft.

Denise, I misinterpreted your measurements. Good thing I'm not a carpenter. Yes, you are correct. Pretty sure they would fit in the IB passthrough. And you can also access that passthrough via the rear compartment door which is behind the faux tire cover.

Thank you for checking, Gayle. The sail bag will fit through that opening, but the boat bag is too big by several inches.

Doesn't LD keep the spare tire stuffed back in the compartment behind the wheel cover? (I know the spare is not actually in the wheel cover.) If so, that would suggest the 'tire cover' opening into the storage area is at least 30" wide, and maybe that tall as well? You don't need to actually measure it again, but does that sound about right? I really appreciate your help.

If the roof is off limits, then consider strapping the larger bag to the ladder.
It's fairly strong and can carry a bit of weight.

I don't know about the Island Bed, but I certainly think the pass-through in my '05 30' Twin Bed would accommodate something like this.  I don't know where the tanks are located in the IB, since there is walk space along the sides, but the fresh water tank is under the passenger side TB & there is spare tire/bay storage under the driver side TB.  The pass-through bay is accessed from both sides, under the heads of the TBs.

Chris, like you, I don't have specific measurements either, but I was reading the 4' as the length that could lay across the width of the back compartment under the heads of the beds, & that the 1' X 1' & 1' X 2' dimensions would likely fit through the pass-through openings (but I've never seen an IB)....

Thank you for checking, Joel and Mary. Someone emailed me they could get their 3'x3' table into the rear storage. I was thrilled to learn this, as no doubt I can get the boat bag through that opening (through the tire cover opening.)
