How to remove the sink drain ring

Anyone ever removed the chrome ring in the sink drain? The one in our bath had a chip on it when we took delivery. It has more chips now and I would like to replace it. But how. Knowing LD used all available sealants on it, it may take C4 to remove it.  Would this tool be the one to use? We just finished parking yea ole LD, so I can't look under the sink right now.  That tool you showed in your post looks like a tool that is used to remove a bathtub or shower drain.  All the sink drains that I've seen are held in place by a locking nut under the sink.  There should be some kind of plumber's putty or gasket material between the drain and sink.  Sometimes those can be quite secure, but will pry off.  If I get a chance to look at our drain, I'll follow-up with a post.

Last year we replaced the two sink drains in the kitchen and it wasn't fun. Of course, as Ed said they are secured on the bottom with a lock nut. Hopefully, that isn't the case with the tub since I can't imagine how you would get to it and I know that isn't the case in home tubs.

The problem is the cheap metal used. The cross piece disintegrated on at least one of them and I had to borrow a big slip joint plier to get it loose.

That said, I believe the only stuff holding it in place was putty.

"The problem is the cheap metal used."

---- Until I read Don's post, I had assumed that the drains in the sinks and shower were plastic with "faux chrome" surfacing because they looked so cheesy and flimsy! Guess they're "pot metal" and not plastic; maybe not much difference? ;-)

Don, a year ago, my kitchen sink had coffee stains.  I soaked them, with either vinegar or bleach, I forget which.  What I learned was that the chrome rings are thin chrome over robust brass or bronze.  The chrome was pretty badly damaged (but the stains were gone).  I bought two replacement rings at a local hardware store.  They were not nearly as heavy as the ones LD used, but they were the right size.
Removing the old ones was not a problem.  I removed the nuts under the sink, then some wiggling freed the drains.  They were set in caulk.  As I understand it, LD uses caulk rather than plumbers putty because 1) the linseed oil in plumbers putty can discolor the sink and 2) plumbers putty does not hold up as well as caulk when subjected to the vibrations that an RV experiences.  In any event, I used plumbers putty on the replacements.  That was a year ago, and I have no leaks showing.

I doubt that you would need any special tools to remove them.

I tried to remove the ugly sink drain in the bath. The putty/chalk beat me. I got as far as making the whole drain turn, but the nut would not yield. I need a tool that would expand and lock in the drain from above. Then insert a bar into the special tool to hold the drain in place while I crank on the nut from below with my S-I-L's 1/1/2 inch socket on his 18 inch bar.

Perhaps the silicon will stop the leak developed by trying to remove the drain. Otherwise I am going to need an ion beam to cut it out.

Of course in a few more years the drain will completely crumble and then it will be easy to replace.
