Backup camera wire schematic

Hi I am new to the group and see lots of conversations about installing a backup camera but not much about the backup wires. I am installing a 2din stereo with backup camera but it needs backup circuit pwr to the stereo. would rather not run a wire all the way from the back (as I am using a wireless camera). Anyone know what color and where I would find the backup circuit wire under the dash or eng comp? Thanks   2004 26 ft LD rear bath

I'm sure someone who "really" knows will chime in. There's no need to go all the way to the rear, of course. There's a switch under the dash mechanically operated by the brake pedal. This is typically connected mechanically between the brake pedal, the moving part and a fixed bracket. The switch could either be switching positive voltage or negative (ground).

This is easy enough to test with a meter or test light. Clip the test light or attach meter lead to a good ground and touch the other lead to both side of the switch. If a voltage is present on one side but not the other, operated the brake pedal and note if the voltage in now present on both. If that be the case, you have determined which side of the switch is "switched" and you know that it is positive.

If neither side of the switch shows voltage then it is switching ground. Proceed by connecting the meter or test light to a known positive voltage (fuse block or battery + etc). Connect the other test lead to each side of the switch. When a voltage is indicated, that's the ground supply side of the switch, the other side should show a ground with the brake pedal is depressed.

Thanks Bumper, but I dont need the brake light I need the backup lights. I know it probably comes from the switch pack on the side of the transmission, but those wires are wrapped up tight and go into several other wire harnesses before getting into the cab. would hate to break into a wire under the cab out in the weather. really just need to know the wire color going to the back then I can trace it.

Thanks

The coach's lighting wiring, running from the front of the vehicle to the coach is routed through the bottom of the driver's step. The plastic step just pops out and is mounted on spring clips.
Under the step you will find bundles of taped wire, this is a good spot to break into the bundles since the area is protected from moisture.
I have no idea on the color code but would probably use a signal tracer, connected to the backup bulb's positive wire. Alternately, a voltage probe with a shape tip could be used.
Finding a copy of your LD's FSM, including the wiring schematic book, is your best solution to finding the color and location the backup light circuit.

In my LD, and most others I have wired, the monitor's on/off switch is used, preferring to leave the monitor on all the time, towing or not. It gives a much better rear view than the side mirrors.

Great information, thanks Larry. I did have a tip previously that the wires were in that location and that it was the black/pink wire but I checked and it was not the correct wire.
Now that I know the wire is in that bundle somewhere I will get a tester and check them all. I used a push pin to check that one wire but I didnt want to do that to all the wires.

Thats a great idea just using a switch to turn it on and leave it on while driving, but I opted for a built in stereo / dvd player with a screen for the backup camera - so it shuts all other features down when the backup monitor is on. I was planning to put a switch in so I could turn it on while driving but havent got that far yet.

I may just rethink this and run it as a separate circuit but I will have to run a power wire to the back since there is no hot wire back there (that I can find).

Thanks again
Jim

That's the main reason why I like separate components., instead of all in one units.
IMO, I would prefer to have the constant rear view instead of music.
With a separate monitor, you can have both, along with the loss of a little dash space.

Everything in life seems to be a trade off. When I off-road I have been known to partake in the grape or a beer. My camera is nice and in plain view, but I had to give up prime cup holder space.
I will have to give this some thought. I wish there was a way to link my back up camera to my IPAD2. Not the first to think of this idea.

Anyone know a video junkie with an IPAD that understands the connectors and OS?

Hi everyone,

I'm just getting caught up on all the posts so please forgive me for not contributing earlier.

A few year ago I installed a Pioneer 2Din stereo/dvd in our 4Runner, I believe it one of the AVH-****DVD models.

It has an option to view the rearview camera while you're driving.  You can switch it on and still listen to your audio source (radio/cd/aux/sd/usb).  I haven't tried it while viewing (or listening) to a dvd.

Hi all just wanted to update and thank everyone for the great input to my issues regarding installation of a new in dash DVD / stereo in our 26.5 RB LD.
I ended up sending back the cheapie Boss stereo (too many problems) and getting a Pioneer AVH-X2700BS DVD Stereo. The Pioneer cost about $100 bucks more but it was well worth it.
It plays DVD's on the dash screen and also plays on coach TV, has bluetooth and works extremely well with my iPhone to play podcasts, music and also hands free phone. The transfer from bluetooth audio to handsfree phone is seamless and it also sends siri or map directions right through the speakers while quieting the music or podcast that is playing. No bluetooth cutting out like I had on the Boss unit and have heard is a big problem with the cheaper head ends.
The controls and optional settings make it so you can configure it pretty much any way you want.

Installation was a little bit of a chore. Since a double DIN receiver does not fit exactly in the Ford E450 dash opening I had to cut away the inside lip a little to get it to fit. also had to run a Composite audio/video cable up to the coach TV (not really all that hard just had to open the A pillar panel and the floor of the top bunk bed).

Had to purchase a line out converter ($10 bucks on Amazon) to convert speaker output to line out for the tv sound (that was easy once I figured out the problem/solution. You have to pay much more for a DVD player that has line out. preamp out will not work for a tv input.

Also had to buy a microbypass gizmo so that the DVD would work because the system is connected to the coach battery and does not go through the ignition switch and parking brake. Many new in dash DVD players will not work unless it senses ignition power and parking brake set conditions (the microbypass simulates this).

Backup camera wiring was the big issue. Really didnt want to run wires all the way from the back of the coach, drill holes, etc - for both power and video signal. Determined (with all of your  help that the backup wires are all in the engine compartment from the transmission and I did not want to splice any wires into those. So I ended up only putting wires in for backup power. Put a switch on the dash. one way the backup camera comes on only when shifter is in reverse, the other way bypasses reverse circuit so camera comes on while moving forward (so I can see my towed vehicle or boat).
Installing the wire ended up being pretty easy since I just pushed the wire up through the conduit to the lower left rear clearance light right up to the camera connections. followed the frame up to the front and went into the wire raceway under the drivers step, then up the wire harness to the dash and radio.
I installed the camera just above the spare tire cover and ran the wires into the spare tire area then through the left side of the housing into the wall behind the bathroom. All connections were made in the wall accessed through the panel next to the toilet.
Did not run the video cable to the front but purchased a wireless video transmitter/receiver on Amazon for $10. Receiver is up behind stereo.

Anyway thanks again for your help. I learned a lot from this exercise so send me a message if you need help.
