Hi Harry; First, I've had a lot of experience with the heater in my old  SOB, and I have investigated how the thermostat works on my LD. Mine is a '99,  but a 2006 is probably the exact same one. The problem you are experiencing, as  far as what you've said, seems to be simply a bad contact in the thermostat. The  on-off lever at the lower left puts a piece of plastic in between two brass  contacts to interrupt current flow, to turn the furnace off. When on, this  primitive switch allows current through to the temperature activated switch,  which also opens to turn off the heater, and closes to start the heater as the  room cools. The two switches are in series. The temperature activated  switch is better built, and has higher quality contacts (some non corroding  metal plating probably). This is necessary because of frequent operation, and  not much closing force. The problem is more likely the actual on-off switch.  Just a little too much resistance in any of these switches, or the wiring  connections might be enough for the 'weak' link to cause erratic operation. Your  comment that 'cycling the on/off switch gets it to all operate normally for  awhile' tells me that this is the dirty switch. Fine abrasive paper and  some alcohol, should fix it. Proper contact cleaners as Andy has suggested can  work but you need to keep the liquid from getting on the walls, plastic housing,  etc. A new thermostat should fix the problem, just two wires to hook up. A good  upgrade would be a digital thermostat, although that can add more complexity. I  really don't expect that there is any problem with the heater itself. It all  just sounds like a dirty contact to me. (Electronic technician for over 60  years), RonB and 'Bluebelle a '99 TKB

The thermostat is the five button digital one. We will keep working with it. We know more now than we did before and will learn more about the lockout mode.
