Toyo Tire Issue

Hi group,

The Ladeze have heard this story, but I will post here...

Years back I had a blow out with a Michelin tire..  not the first, but with all the recalls with Michelin I went with a different brand on Blue, and Toyo's from Les Schwab on Ghost Rider, 2005 RB.   The Toyo's were a MATCHED set of six, just at 4 years old, under 25K mileage.

On my way to Ladeze in Moab, I started having some bouncing with the left front, so I thought I threw a wheel weight.  I stopped in the Verde Valley, tire store closed, and a walk about and tire inspection showed nothing out of the ordinary.  I stopped again in Flagstaff at Discount Tire at 4:30pm, and was I in for a shock!!!

Five out the six tires were failing.... horribly checked side walls, or bubbled tread, or tread ready to separate, or "pie-crust" side walls.  According to Toyo's website (and Joan & Larry's cautions), the tires have always been properly inflated, covered and generally babied.  I running the PSI per my weight (via Escapees smart weigh).

The tires were inspected two days before I left, again the morning I left, and less than 200 miles from home.  Speed was 60-62 mph, temps in the 80's/90's.

I went with Kumho tires now, and Toyo is collecting the failed tires for inspection.  The guys at Discount were awesome, they worked overtime on a Saturday night and did a great job.  Unfortunately I did lose a wheel cover, even though I watched them like a hawk.

I'll keep you informed.  Glad I have a guardian angle or three up there, and did not have a blow out or other issue when on the road!

Lisa, I'm very glad that you were able to discover this potentially disastrous situation before the tires had a melt down and left you riding on the rims - or worse! Scary, indeed!

I, and I'm sure, others, will be very interested to hear what Toyo has to say about the catastrophic tire failures, particularly since the "deterioration" of 5 of 6 tires happened so quickly.  Please post the outcome of their investigation!

Praise the Lord for your wisdom & safety catch! ...wonder how old the Toyo tires were at time of purchase per "DOT" tire stamp?

...If they sat on the warehouse shelf for a number of years, tires deteriorate & can come apart after installed...most reputable, vendors stopped old tire "discount dumping", because of fatalities, injuries & property damage not to mention serious law suit settlements.
...just wondering, I understand Les Schwab serves fairly fresh tires...yes, be worth knowing why your Toyo tires fell apart so drastically? Again glad for you, Vaughn
