02 26.5 MB Having problems flushing?
Yahoo Message Number: 79206
Having had a number of problems with our toilet stopping up I tried everything I could think of. From plunging, water vac, closet auger, etc.whatever I tried only solved the problem temporarily. I thought that we had dropped some object into the toilet by mistake and that whatever it was alternately clogged and unclogged the pipe leading to the black tank.
Last week I went to the mothership to see a partially assembled 26.5 to see if I could determine how to disassemble the toilet/piping/tank attachment. What I found was interesting and informative.
The toilet in the 26.5 sits on a framework which makes space for a 3" pipe to run at approximately 45 deg from the base of the toilet downward to another 45 deg fitting and then into the top of the tank.
The discharge from the toilet drops into the tank opening onto the inside of the tank through an opening obstructed by the angle of the wheel well. The actual opening is narrowed to such an extent that it is very difficult to have any sizeable object (you fill in the blanks) pass through it.

In my humble opinion this tank needs a serious redesign. But, until that time be sure to use RV TP and bring along a plunger. If you have some ideas or experiences with this same problem, here's one camper who would like to hear about it!

There's no question that the midbath's toilet plumbig is more prone to clogging than that of models where the pipe from the toilet drops straight down into the black tank. I experienced a few clogs in my first months of ownership, until I learned to use more water when flushing solid wastes, and to let it run for about three seconds after flushing. Since then, I haven't had any problems. And by the way, I do flush toilet paper, and I use inexpensive two-ply brands like Quilted Northern. I know this is controversial in some quarters, but in my experience it makes no difference. The key is simply to use enough water to wash it down into the tank. Do that, and there's no problem.

As for redesigning, the reason the pipe takes a couple of bends is that in the midbath, the toilet sits directly over the rear wheels, which are in the middle of the coach. The only way to fix the problem would be to completely rearrange the floorplan so that the bathroom was no longer in the middle...and then, of course, it would be a very different layout than the one that has been LD's best seller for years.

I agree that the design is less than optimal, but it can be coped with. LD has been building the midbath's toilet and tank that way for a good many years. If they all clogged up on a regular basis, I suspect that customer complaints woould have forced a change long ago.
We midbath owners are a hardy, resourceful lot. ;-) We can deal with it.
So to repeat: my suggestion is to use more water when flushing solids, and hold the valve open for 2-3 seconds after the waste has disappeared, letting water continue to run and wash wastes down into the tank. Once I learned to do that, I stopped having clogs.

I agree with what Andy has to say.  We've had our MB for over 5 years now, and have had just a few clogs in that time.  They generally occured when we tried to conserve on water during flushing.  Make sure there is a fair amount of water in the bowl before flushing, and then let it run a bit as Andy says.  Sometimes I'll open the valve with the foot pedal and use the sprayer to rinse the drain pipe.

OK, I'm replying to a message I posted twelve years ago. That must be some kind of record. ;-)

But since way back then we were talking about how the midbath's double-45° toilet waste pipe causes clogs, I thought you'd enjoy this gem I stumbled upon in the Airstream forums. It concerns their 26U model:

"In the 26 the black tank is not under the bathroom, it's on the other side of the axles, and the pipe makes six 90 degree bends and goes UP in one spot. Thus the electric [macerator] toilet. I’ve been trying to avoid it, fearing a clog.”

I hasten to add that my Airstream 27FB's toilet dumps straight down into the black tank, and I like it that way.
