Wheel cover mount blown

Driving up from NJ as the lead car I notice a flapping on the rig by the rear wheel passenger side.  On stopping we found the plate to that holds the wing nut that holds the wheel cover down had blown.
On searching the site I came across Larry's picture of a repair to the wheel mount which seemed to be the same problem we have. The details however do not seem to match our wheel cover.

Now we have - really - 20 thumbs between us.  We are learning but are brave souls with little camping or handyman experience and are still at the stage where we find ourselves needing help.  Could anyone give us some ideas about fixing this or Larry would your idea work on our '96 rig?

I just uploaded photos from the repair I made on the fender skirt on our Lazy-Daze several months ago. I used WEST epoxy to repair and reinforce the top where the hinge attaches, and also repaired and strengthened the bottom corners where the wing nuts hold the bottom in place.  I installed new stainless steel fender washers and rubber washers between the plastic to hold better.  The fender skirt is plastic, not fiberglass, at least that's how mine are.  So you have to sand the plastic for the epoxy to have something to bond better to. I was concerned about the bonding, but so far there is no problems.  As the photos show, all the work was accomplished on the inside of the fender skirt.  The outside was protected with masking tape in the repair areas.

Are you referring to the spare tire cover or the dual wheel covers? The only photo I have is of a spare tire cover repair bracket, used when the corner blows out, removing the hole in the fiberglass that's used to secure the cover.
Every cover is slightly different and the bracket needs to be built to fit. There is no kit or supply.

To help prevent future blowouts, using nylon washers under the spare tire cover's acorn nut and the dual wheel cover's knobs,  to evenly tighten the fiberglass covers, eliminating pressure points that can cause cracks and possible blowouts.
Another problem I see in the spare tire cover and the dual wheel covers are cracks appearing around the pop-rivet used to attach the covers to the fiberglass. When a crack starts, it may keep spreading. To stop or slow down the progress of the crack, drill a very tiny hole at the end of each crack. I use a very tiny, #60 drill bit.

I have the nylon washer with an aircraft nut to hold my spare tire cover closed. With the aircraft nut you don't have to tighten it much to secure. Helps keep cracks from forming around the cover hole. Nylon washer spreads the load. A telecom barrel wrench is the perfect size for the nut. You can get the cover opened almost instantly.

Bob, when you say "aircraft nut," are you referring to a castellated nut (with cotter pin), or to a Nyloc nut? A Google search for 'aircraft nut' shows both types.

Andy, I am using the Nyloc nut and I should have called it that. Don't think I need a cotter pin type as mine has never loosened. I got the nut and nylon washer at an OSH hardware store but Home Depot/Lowes probably has them also.
