Tow Hitch 23.5 TK

I climbed under the LD the other day to inspect my trailer hitch assembly on our 1997 23.5 TK. There is a trailer hitch bolted to the bottom of the factory bumper, and I wanted to see how it was supported and attached. I thought that maybe I'll have to install some higher strength bolts.  I assumed that being a 23.5, (E350 chassis), the frame from Ford would extend all the way to the rear.  However, what I discovered is the frame is probably 1 1/2' short, and a 3" "C" beam is bolted to the chassis frame to extend out to the bumper. For our sailboat we intend to tow, this just won't be acceptable. So I'll need to fabricate a stronger extension on the frame to support the tongue weight and weight of the trailer and boat. My friend has a 27' LD on a E450 chassis and they tow their jeep with no problem, (4,500 Lbs, which is comparable to my boat and trailer weight), but a toad won't have the tongue weight that I'll have. Hopefully someone has already solved this issue, or knows a direction to point me.

Doing a search of the message board (and the Photos section) will bring up many posts on the topic of hitches/towing/weights, etc. This compilation from the Lazy Daze Companion also provides good information:

You will probably receive information and advice from those who have significantly upgraded the hitch assembly for safe towing; hopefully, some of those responses will be from towing owners who have the 23.5' E350 (11500 GVWR).

My 01 23.5 TK was done there. I tow a Jeep Cherokee no problems.
