Hello,

Just wondering how you ladies handle the cupboard in the kitchen above the sink. Right next to the micro.
It the one that  is long and narrow, goes back toward the kitchen window. It bugs me so much, you have to take things out to get what is in the back. Just like to know what you do.
Thanks for any suggestion Linda

You will probably get several answers to this one!

I have a TK, but I think the configuration of that cupboard is the same as in the MB. I carry occasionally-used staples, like cans and bottles of juice (wrapped round with a wide strip of the mesh shelf liner stuff and rubber-banded) in the "well" area. I keep everyday/often used items on four 9" Copco turntables, 2 on each shelf, for easy access; the turntable closest to the "cave" has small/"flat" stuff on it, e.g., cans of tuna, so I can reach back into the cupboard and retrieve the stashed items when I need to.

As always, YMMV. ;-)

Joan, how do you keep things from falling over and/or off the turntable?  I love turntables, but haven't figured out a way to use them efficiently.  I just make sure that I have the appropriate size/shape/number of containers in a space, and then just refill them.

Plates and bowls and small teapot and coffee press on the bottom. Coffee mugs and tumblers on the top. Travel 20oz mugs in the well.
The right side cupboard holds salt, tea, coffee, some spices rarely used, popcorn. By and large except for the coffee and salt it is for occasionally used staples.
Across from the sink the large cupboard holds a home depot 2 shelf plastic unit with 3 bins in it. They hold all the daily use staples from flour to canned beans and oatmeal, whiskey and wine along side the bins. :-) Sandy 23.5 TK KalleAnka

Hi Linda, I have a RB so the cupboards are configured a little differently, but managing the space and hard-to-get-to areas is similar.  I too use a turntable and shove it against the cupboard wall to hold small items then store other staples (p.butter, canned goods) in front of it.  Coffee, and other tall containers (olive oil, red vinegar) reside in the well.

I have found the absolutely *most* useful, convenient cupboard organizers are plastic coated wire shelf doublers.  They are available in different heights, lengths and widths.  Search for "cabinet shelf organizers."  Your search will probably turn up many sources for metal organizers, but the lighter, more flexible plastic-coated wire  organizers can be found at Camping World, W'Mart, The Container Store, hardware stores and "pharmacies" like CVS.

These organizers are in every one of my cabinets (even the RB's tiny medicine cabinet), thus almost doubling available space for this fulltimer.

Have fun organizing Linda -- lots of great ideas here.

Judie, the turntables have raised edges, and the rubbery surface coating helps keep items from sliding around. Once in a while, something will fall off if the road is particularly rough, but otherwise, stuff stays put well *unless* one side of the turntable is loaded heavier than the other.

Interesting.  Thank you, Joan.  I had a couple of those exact turntables, but upon looking for them today, I couldn't find them, so not sure what I did with them when I decided not to use them in my former motorhome.  In our current RB, I'm not sure where I would put them anyway.  I don't keep much in the way of canned goods around, and a storage place for short containers of spices wouldn't be a good use for them, either.  I'll go back to re-read what Lorna wrote about her use of the space in the Rear Bath model.

The three "pantry" shelves under my sink house my herbs and spices.  I keep one can of refried beans and one of kidney beans in my sock drawer in case there is a need for an emergency burrito or a bowl of chili.

I'm not a lady, but I do have a 27' midbath. You can read about how I store things in the kitchen cupboards in this article.

Linda,

I have a 23 1/2 Twin-King.  In that similar cabinet above the range, on the lower shelf,  I have three-plastic bins similar to shoe boxes that I bought at The Container Store.  Inside the back of the bins I keep shorter items such as baking powder, baking soda, tomato paste, tuna,  so that I can push the filled bins under the shelf.  Towards the front where they extend,  I keep taller items such as bottles of cooking oil, vinegar, etc.  There is still room so I have a more narrow wood bin in the remaining space where I keep spices.  Since I am short, it is easy for me to pull out the bins and find what I want.  There is still room in front of the bins.  I usually keep a box of cereal in the front of the bins and also a small glass container that holds small bags of sugar and sweeteners.  On the top shelf I keep boxed items like pasta, rice, and pancake mix.

I have a couple of turntables, and I cut a circle of the "rubberized" shelf lining to fit.  That helps items stay put.  I keep my coffee mugs and a stainless steel utensil container in back of the kitchen faucets on a turntable and they stay put.

"...a storage place for short containers of spices wouldn't be a good use for them, either. "

----- ;-) All my Penzey's herbs and spices (i oz. containers) are kept on one of the turntables in that same cupboard; they're immediately visible and accessible and away from heat and light.

We can certainly get storage tips and ideas from many sources, and I think it's a rare galley that hasn't been re-organized a few times for "use convenience" and to incorporate storage solutions gleaned from seeing others' rigs and adapted to one's own needs; I know that mine has!  But, each situation is unique; ultimately, where and how stuff is stashed will be what works for the food preparers in the "rig family", the storage layouts and options of the particular model, their cooking and eating habits, and their travel/living styles, i.e., weekenders to fulltimers,

For example, I travel solo, do short-term trips, almost always dry camping, and am a "scratch cook" ("Food Rules") by preference and necessity.  What works for me in my particular rig and for my particular needs and travel style might be a real drag for others. I mean, how many people have a special little pan just to cook the dog's meat and vegetables!? ;-)

Seeing what others have done to customize their rigs is part of the fun of a gathering like the Morro Bay LD campout; quite a few people are willing to open their LDs for "rig tours", and one can pick up ideas and suggestions from some very creative and clever people.

Beyond the far "end" of that cupboard is an unused void in the corner through which the sink vent pipe runs to the roof. If you cut a hole through the end panel with a Dremel type tool and router bit, and make a new end panel (stick on with Velcro) you gain some space that is ideal for hiding stuff. It will hold stuff such as a hand gun, wallet, cash and other valuables.

---- Definitely a good hidey hole option for the MB and TK models. It's a tight fit to get in there with a Dreml, and one does need good, focused light to do the work. I checked out making this modification, but depth perception issues, a saw, and proximity to the plastic vent pipe could be problematic. ;-)

The rear cupboard in the MB and TK models offers a similar "stash" possibility; one can cut fitted panels (with a suble pull tab or a not-so-subtle finger hole) to serve as doors to the spaces on either/both ends of the cupboard.

In regard to a safe place to store things. Out of the way and out of sight. I placed a key-less safe under the lav.
Hand gun, money, passport you name it.
The safe is bolted to the floor, wall and shelf above. Just how much time they want to take to get the safe out of the MH. Yes they will do a hell of a lot of damage to the lav/MH. I have not given it a though till this time but I could put a peace of paneling in front of the save so that it looked like it was just a false area. Place a wall switch on it to look like it was for something else.

The one that I found to be a problem was where to place silver ware, spatula, long spoons, and knifes. I was not willing to give up a draw for these when you only had three. The short shelf above made in easy to stand them up right.

We found it much better to store kitchen knives (an even scissors) on a magnetic strip sold for the purpose. It gets the sharp knives out of the drawer to where they are easy to get at, and frees up space in the drawer.

"We found it much better to store kitchen knives (an even scissors) on amagnetic strip."

I feel the same way. For a number of years I used a metal-surfaced magnetic knife rack and was happy with it, although I did have to resharpen my knives more often than I'd like. But it kept the knives readily accessible, and put otherwise unused wall space (to the right of the stove in my midbath) to good use. And the knives stayed put over the roughest roads--I never had one fall off.

However, recently a friend pointed out that every time I took a knife off the rack or put it back on, the sliding metal-to-metal contact tended to dull the blade. I ended up replacing my metal knife rack with a Mag-Blok from Benchcrafted. These knife racks look like solid bars of high-quality hardwood--and like wood, they won't dull knife blades--but they contain powerful magnets that firmly hold whatever you place against them.

I bought a cherry Mag-Blok. It came with a tube of the company's "Blok Butter," a mixture of mineral oil and beeswax that imparted a lovely glowing finish when rubbed into the wood. If you're looking for a magnetic knife rack, this one looks great and works well.
