I use a 20 amp-to-30 amp puck to protect the pins on my shore power cable plug.  I put it on the plug whenever I store the cable.

So far, I've just made sure that the pins are "protected" from getting smashed or bent in the storage compartment by "nesting" the plug end in a shop towel.  Most of the camping I do is dry, so the 11-year-old+ Marinco cord/attachment/plug are still in good shape; I haven't experienced shedding of the plating, but, yes, if I noticed copper showing on the pins, I get a new cord, too! ;-)

PPL has a pretty good price on item # 55-8961 on this page; there's also a Marinco manufacurer's number to look up this particular cord on another site:
