Good deal on 1992 22' ?
Yahoo Message Number: 149856
I have a 1987 22' in good shape except for paint (stripes) and I recently ran across a 1992 22' with the same floorplan of the sofa & barrel chairs in the back.  The one I found is excellent condition, original owner with under 45,000 miles, solar panels, 6 new tires and freshly tuned.

I'm wondering if the changes between mine and the 1992 are substantial enough to justify selling mine and buying this other one.  Any input is welcome. The owner said he gets 11-13 mpg where I only get 8.

I'm also trying to figure out a good price.  It seems a little high at $11K.

Thanks for your input.

There are major differences between the 87 and 92 models that make the later model LD a better RV.

The 350 engine is upgraded with true fuel injection.
The three speed Turbo 400 transmission was replaced with the improved 4L80E 4-speed, overdrive transmission.
These two features are what add to the mileage, as well as increasing the engine life due to lower operating speeds.
The 93 also is missing the leak-prone front overhead cab window.
I believe it was during this time that the multi-piece sheet aluminum roof was replaced with a one piece roof.

--- It's impossible (without evaluating the two) to know the actual differences, e.g., engine size, down-the-road weights, overall condition, between the 1987 and the 1992, but the claim of 11-13 mpg sounds like "smoke" to me. If the 1992 is sound, leak-free, the engine, systems, and appliances check out well, and the rig offers features that your 1987 doesn't have, it might be worth considering, but I would not base a buying choice, even partially, on "optimistic" mileage figures.

As ever, YMMV.

We had a similar experience.  We started with a 1987 22FL.  But because we hauled a motorcycle trailer and our family was growing, we opted to sell the 1987 and bought a 1992 MB.  We were happy with the extra power to pull the trailer.  No longer do we have to put our blinkers on when climbing hills.

So, Larry, in your experience, is the 11-13 mpg a realistic claim for a 1992 22' with the up-powered Chevy 350?

10 mpg. We have a 1994 22', 350 ci. 10's the number. Maybe 11 going downhill with a 40 mph tailwind!

Not sure on the exact numbers but it will certainly get better than the 7-8 MPG we got in our 1983 LD (carburetor and a 3-speed, non-overdrive automatic). A 2-4 MPG improvement is quite possible.

This type of mileage has always been available in the short G30 and E350 models, when equipped with fuel injection and 4-speed overdrive transmissions.
The same floor plan, in E350 and E450s, will see a 1-2 MPG difference primarily due to the different axle ratio and lighter weight chassis. The downside of the better mileage is the limited cargo capacity.
Short E450s pay a mileage penalty for the increase in CCC and overall robustness.

We both know people who often get over 10 MPG in short E450 models. It requires driving slow (55-MPH or less) and evenly.

Thanks for the input on the mileage...I will take the mileage he claims and assume it is closer to 10.

Any thoughts about what a fair price would be if it is in the excellent, A1 condition the seller describes it to be?

Thanks again,

Randy

Click on the Files tab on the home page of the message board. Open the "Buying and Selling" folder, then scroll to the file "LD Asking Prices 2015". This is a chart showing *suggested* asking prices for all models from 1967 through 2015; the chart is a good starting point for pricing information for sellers and/or buyers.

The 1992's condition may be as advertised, but I suggest doing a *thorough* inspection of all components.

Very cool spreadsheet and helpful information.  I will work with this to see if the seller is willing to negotiate.

Cheers and Thanks again,

Randy

Differences between 1987 and 1992 22' (Chevy-based) LDs:

* Electronic fuel injection replaces carburetor

* Leak-prone front overcab window eliminated

* 4L80E 4-speed auto transmission replaces old TH400 3-speed

Those are all major advantages, in my humble opinion.

Andy, that's about it. Our '93 22' MP really hit the sweet spot:

- 454 efi - 4L80E overdrive tranny - no cab window
We spent money on suspension & cooling. New coil springs in front with air bags, air springs in the rear to complement/supplement the (aging) leaf springs. Brand new heater core, entire AC system, brakes, master cycl, power steering pump.
67k miles - the dang thing runs like a champ. We never abide by traditional RV driving rules ie leave early to avoid traffic. Rather, we leave whenever we dang well please. Stuck in LA traffic? No big deal - run the ac, relax, engine stays cool, oil pressure stays fine.
Today it went into the shop to get the serpentine belt replaced. Check your fluids, double check tire pressure, keep everything in tip-top shape, no stress, no worries.

Randy:  I just sold 7 months ago a 1995 LD and bought a 2005 LD.  I studied the chart and also studied the used RV market.  My conclusion:   there is no way to measure the value of such an old RV.  Its value is whatever someone is willing to pay for it.   I may have sold my old one at too low a price and I probably bought the newer one at too high of a price...but bascially it is because I wanted a newer LD and the newer one had the features I wanted. ---there were other RVs available at a far cheaper price but they were not LDs.

That's my philosophy with used vehicles: if it's really the one I want, I'm willing to pay more with little or no dickering. I don't want to lose it to someone that knocks on the owner's door and says "I'll pay your price" while I'm trying to shave 5 or 10% off the asking price.
With older ones, like the 2005 SOB we bought last year (9000 miles!), low mileage and good condition is a rarity: miss a good one and you might not have another chance - especially with low production units like the LD and that SOB I bought.
