Grinding sound .... Electric Steps

This morning as I was starting to winterize 'Baxter' I heard a grinding sound from the extension of my steps. They, the steps, come out about 50% or so from under the motor home. I was able to push with my foot the step all the way down. When I close the door the step motor closes about 25% then makes the grinding sound. I'm able to push the step back in about 90%.
I called Vince. He thinks it's either the motor or transmission. He will send me the parts. I will attempt to replace both step motor and transmission. Has anyone else done this job? Is it easy or not? Are there any issues I should be aware of ? Thank you all for any help.

I doubt it either the motor or gear box are bad. It sounds like a binding issue caused by dirt and lack of lubrication or a bent step assembly.

The steps owner's manual tells to lubricate the pivots monthly. No one does but it needs to be done regularly and when the step motor labors or if the step opens or closes short.
The step control does not have any electrical limit switches. It establishes where to stop by monitoring the amount of power the motor is consuming. When the amperage rate goes above a calibrated limit, the motor shuts off, until cycled again. This normally happens at the end of the mechanical travel, when the step is locked open or closed.
When the step is binding, the power needed to open or close it can exceed the limit, even if the step stops part way through the cycle.
If the binding is cause by something being bent, it should be noticeable with a visual inspection. Watch the step closely as it cycles.

The fact that it can be forced, is a good indication of binding.
Give it a good lubrication either using Kwikee's spray grease or some other spray grease.
I use electric garage door track spray. A little goes a long way.

If it turns out to be the gearbox or some other problem, lets us know.
