Propping fender skirts...

Since there are infrequent needs to open the fender skirts on our '04 FL, I had never before taken the time to arrange a permanent solution to keeping them propped open. This was a concern when the tires were all replaced for the Michelin recall, requiring me to stand guard while all six wheels were pulled off at once. So, with some time to kill yesterday, I made up these:

They are lightweight (pre-stained, finished redwood trim), simple, easy to use and stow, so they will always be available when needed. The eyelets are #8 size from Home Depot, and fit nicely over the stud and thru the skirt holes. The wood cross-section was chosen just large enough to NOT slip through the hole. If the above link doesn't work, the 'Photos' album is 'skirt_props'.

Steve, these props are very clever; much better than just using one's head as a fender skirt prop! ;-)

Nice fix. I like the eye hooks to prevent the skirts from falling if bumped.

When needing to hold the wheel skirts or refrigerator access door open, duct tape or masking tape has been my choice. Strong duct tape can also be used to hold the skirts open when running snow chains or cables.

FYI - Duct tape come in various degrees of quality ranging from thin and nearly worthless to very thick and strong. The strongest, commonly available duct tape I've found is Gorilla Tape, available at Home Depot and others.

Another solution to holding up the fender skirts: I found that hooking a bungie to the window frame above the skirt and hooking the lip of the skirt (or screw hole) of our rear bath works quite well and the two bungie cords are easy to store.

Hello:

We had the same issue - those rear wheel skirts needed to be up and out of the way once in a while.  For us, that was whenever I washed the wheel covers, sprayed Aerospace Protectant on the tires, had rear brakes serviced, checked the rear wheel lug nut torque, or had rear wheels removed for tire replacement or service.

I used some items we had on hand.  Two small lengths of elastic 'Bongie Cord" with plastic hooks on each end, and four large 'suction cup' hangers (easy on, easy off).  I was at first concerned that the suction cups would mark the paint, but they did not.  I did wipe off the dust off the paint before applying them and the longest we needed them on was once for an overnight tire replacement.  Total weight was less than a pound and the bongie cords resided in a plastic refrigerator bag in my on-board tool box. Twins of the suction cup hangers were normally used in our shower stall as extra towel and wash cloth hangers.....
