Larger transmission cooler- E450
Yahoo Message Number: 149054
Early last summer summer, Andy told me about a larger transmission cooler he had installed in his LD.
I didn't pay much attemtion until I had a chance to see the specs and measure the stock cooler...wow,  the thing looked huge in comparison, at twice the size of the stock cooler, now I was interested!

This is an involved project that took a good six hours to do to our 2003 FL. It required modifications to existing brackets and some new brackets plus a lot of plumbing.

In the end, it was worth it.

The cooler was installed in late June,  just days before a 4th of July trip to the Eastern Sierras and Mammoth Lakes. Within a couple hours of leaving home, it was apparent that something was wrong, as the trans temp were higher than usual. A quick road side stop showed the thermo valve was in full bypass and the cooler wasn't receiving any hot fluid. A infrared thermometer made the diagnosis quick and painless.
A stop at the autoparts store in Bishop provide the needed parts to ditch the bypass-valve. Once done, the temps dropped to where I had hope they would be.
We now have 5000 miles on the new cooler, recently returning from a month long trip up to the PWN. There were plenty of very long, steep upgrades in blistering 105+ temps. Pulling a 4000-lbs Jeep, the peak temps ran a good 10 degree cooler than before, under the worse of conditions. I'm pleased.
