The stove top, trials of a rookie

So there I was with a little free time and wanting to tidy up the place before my wife meets up with me tomorrow - she, still working; me retired.
I notice the stove top under the grate is getting a little ugly looking. I pull the grate off and while cleaning one of the rubber grommets the keep the grate from rattling gets pushed through.
I look at this thing an prod this way and push the other.
I am not a brute force fix it type. I generally go to someone before resorting to a bigger hammer.
Any way the stove cover shifts and lifts off.  Grommet found and replaced.   Job done. Just snap the cover back on and that ... is...
Why won't the dang (and several other words) cover go back on.
It does not "snap" in place. It slides in place. But why won't it catch.  To release the top one presses the top towards the rear of the stove then lifts the front. But for the life of me I could not get it to catch to go back on.
Because while figuring out how it "snapped" into place I had pushed the keepers the top slides into down.  They pulled back up with finger pressure. If some one out there does this don't pull them up to much or the top may rattle going down the road.
All this was likely in the stove's manual but I did not look.  I post hoping this helps the next rookie.

John, it's very likely that the little tab at the front of the stove "basin" edge has broken off. The tab is very small and barely "tack welded" (if that); it's a terrible design and the part is very cheaply made. The tab is supposed to keep the stove top from sliding forward after it is pushed into place using the rear springs, but when it snaps off, the stove top is essentially hooked at only the rear , i.e., not "locked" in place.

II think that a tab could be fabricated and "welded" (the welders on the board will know the appropriate process), but I haven't bothered with this. The tab on my stove broke off years ago, so the stove top sits a little closer to the front edge than it would if the tab were there to hold it back. But, the stove top doesn't slide, and everything is still working and accessible, so it's just an annoyance and not a real "inconvenience".

As ever, YMMV.
