Fuel pump 2000 rear bed

My LD sat in storage for couple months without starting up. Went to try dead. Put in new battery. Engine turns over will not start. Sprayed ether (engine start) to carburetor . Engine will run but shuts down after I stop spraying . Checked all fuses under hood and all in cab . Checked crash switch all good. under hood fuse box fuel pump relay clicks when I turn ignition on and off.
Have half tank gas and generator runs on it smoothly so I'm counting out bad fuel.
Cannot hear fuel pump go on or off. Don't know what else I can do? Does it need new fuel pump? Can something else be checked. Otherwise have to tow into ford dealership. I understand the Gas tank needs to be dropped to get at fuel pump. Is having it towed my next option. Anyone have this done and know cost? Is there a recommendation what kind fuel pump to replace it with? Thanks for help David

I had the fuel pump in my ld changed;  it cost 500 dollars;  but you have a choice;  replace the pump or replace the pump and the harness that goes on it.   if you do the latter then the price goes up another 200- 250 dollars over the 500 dollars.   I think you just look up a pump part for the E-350 ford to see the options

If knowledgeable enough, you can use a injection fuel pump tester to see if the pump is running and its output pressure. There is a test port on the engine where it attaches http://www.harborfreight.com/fuel-injection-pump-tester-92699.html

$20 at Harbor Freight.
Changing an in-tank fuel pump is a big, expensive job, make sure that  is what's needed before proceeding.

Try rapping on the tank with a rubber mallet. Many times this will get the pump running - temporarily - at least it would confirm the fuel pump is the problem. jac

In-tank fuel pump replacements come two way, either as a separate fuel pump or as an assembly, where a new pump, filter and the fuel level sender are bundled into a ready to install package.
Changing just the pump requires disassembly of the in-tank package. Unless only the pump is available, I  suggest changing the whole assembly as the rest of the assembly is also used. Save a bit of expensive shop time not rebuilding the pump, so the cost isn't as high. For the amount of work involved in changing the pump, I use all new parts.
I prefer either an OEM pump manufacturer or a Bosch pump.
Stay very far away from any Airtex pump, unless you want to do it again soon.

Rock Auto has a complete Motorcraft (OEM) fuel pump assembly for $260, Denso (another OEM) pumps at $180

If doing it yourself, be aware there are several different pump assemblies available, depending on where the fuel tank is a aft or mid-mount and how many outlet ports is has (LDs use an aft-mounted, three port pump)..
Suggest removing the pump and taking it to Napa and having it matched to save the guess work and hassle of returning the wrong pump..

Well for a chance at a temporary solution to get you to a mechanic. Tap on the gas tank rather vigorously and then try it. Often on a DC motor a small mechanical shock will get the brushes to make contact again.  How hard to tap I use the heel of my fist about like I was knocking on a door and they didn't hear me the first time. If it don't work the thump at the same the the key is being switched from off to on might be more effective. Worth a try before a tow if localed where you can do it safely.
