frig door hinge problem

OK, I remember this coming up a couple of years back. I have a Norcold N841 8cu.ft. frig, new in 2010.
The bottom hinge has broke off..it was just a plastic "cap" that fits over the metal hinge, and it is PART of the door frame..there's no way to replace just the plastic part. Seems like someone else on this list figured out a way to fabricate a repair without having to replace the whole blankety-blank door!

I thought perhaps it was Andy who did this? Anyway, has anyone else figured out a work around for this problem? Otherwise I have to order/find a new door, and the closest Norcold dealer is in Albuquerque, New Mexico..[I'm close to Taos].

Also, talking to their rep this am...turns out there's a "hinge reinforcement" part #634-166...think they might have just put the darned thing ON the new frig in the first place, as this obviously is a break to expect with this design? Grrrrrrr.

"I thought perhaps it was Andy who did this?"

Gini, I cobbled up a fix to the broken latch on my Dometic fridge a few years ago, but I haven't had a problem with my Norcold N641. (Of course, it's only a couple of years old.)

The hinge reinforcement (part #634-166) is apparently intended to prevent an intact hinge from breaking, but looking on line, I found mixed opinions as to whether it could be used to repair a broken hinge. People who tried to glue it on with epoxy didn't seem to have much success. If it were me, I'd attach it with self-tapping screws going into the door frame.

The following comments, which I found on the above web page, may be helpful, although I don't pretend to fully understand them. I did manage to find a photo of the reinforcement part.

"You can just order the hinge reinforcement brackets and secure them to the door edges with Gorilla Glue. The reinforcement brackets ring the hinge holes and slide into the hinge rod brackets, which screw to the fridge. So you can try repairing it using just the reinforcement brackets before you spend big money on an entire door. DO NOT glue the reinforcement brackets to the old door prior to 'test-repairing' it for a few weeks.

"The reinforcement brackets slide onto the top and bottom edges of the door, over the hinges. Once you know the repair will hold, THEN glue the brackets in place for maximum security. If the brackets do not secure the door to your standards, you can always order a new door and use the brackets on it.
"I got my hands on a used door off Ebay and had it delivered to me for around $120. I reinforced the plastic hinges with 'Cold-Weld' Compound and then Gorilla-glued the reinforcement brackets to the door edges. I then spray painted the finished repair Black so it blends with the door. If you want some photos I'll be happy to email them to you. jayjacobson2 at gmail.com"

Ten years ago, Norcold used metal hinge and latch hardware. Now it's plastic. Not a step in the right direction. I still believe their refrigerators are superior to Dometic's overall (especially after recently discovering the diagnostic mode, which provides very detailed information on the fridge's two-digit LED display--a feature no Dometic has)... but I wish they hadn't cheapened the quality of their door hardware. I've ordered a reinforcement kit for my fridge.

I have a hinge problem on my Dometic refrigerator and wonder if anyone has had a similar problem and could recommend a fix.  Opening the door and holding it from the bottom  while taking items in an out of the refrigerator is a real pain!
