Lazy Daze store items - what to purchase

Hi all!  It's me, the newby, again.  When Lazy Daze sent the letter to confirm our date to pick up our LD, they also enclosed a list of store items they sell.  Some things seem obvious "gotta haves", but others not so much, such as a surge guard for $255.  Does anyone have this from the store or is it less expensive elsewhere? Btw, this is our first motorhome so lots to learn.

Following are just my thoughts .....
After paying 80k plus for my new Lazy Daze (worth every penny) I didn't want to cheap out on protection.   A good quality surge guard is worth what you pay for.   I brought a Progressive http://www.progressiveindustries.net/ems_pt30c.htm Just last week it protected me from plugging into a defective Rv camp outlet.

Also I'd get the factory installed vinyl sunscreen for your front windshield.   My wife talked me into it.  They will install it as you finish your appear work.
(Smile) also the vinyl insulated covers are a good bet.

Diana, for what it's worth, here's how I shop for RVing items (assuming, of course, that I'm not in a big hurry): First I check Amazon, then I check Walmart, then I check RV dealers such as Camping World and Lazy Daze. Amazon and Walmart usually have the lowest prices, so I always look there first. For a power conditioner, I'd definitely shop online.

Second piece of advice: don't buy a SurgeGuard. Oh, it's better than nothing, but I've had that type, and they are not very well constructed internally. (See this account of the repairs I made after my rig was struck by lightning.) I do think a power conditioner/surge protector is an excellent idea, but I recommend Progressive Industries' EMS-HW30C box, which is better designed and built and much more easily maintainable.

Third piece of advice: don't buy an external plug-in power conditioner. Sitting outside in all kinds of weather, they're more likely to fail prematurely; they can easily be stolen or left behind; and they're one more thing to find storage space for. Instead, get the EMS-HW30C unit I just mentioned and have it permanently wired in. It'll take up less space, be more reliable... and you won't have to think about it. :-)

There is a windshield boot on the list.  Is that the vinyl sunscreen you are referring to?

I agree with Andy.  A wired one better.  I wanted it from day one of ownership.  I purchased the EMS-PT30C [http://www.progressiveindustries.net/ems_pt30c.htm].  It's also a voltage protector.

Since I live in a state that has no sales tax. I purchased as many of the items as I could from Amazon.    I shipped my pillows and bedding to the factory.  I used my Diamond status with Delta to bring 6 suit cases with me.

Yes.  The factory folks can install it as you are doing the paper work.  (Smile) worth buying in California even with the sales tax.

We purchases our 07 MB used. The previous (second) owner took me by the factory so I could get a look as he was teaching me the finer points on driving the RV  I did purchase the surge protector from LD and also some shirts.  The original owner naught floor mats (I think there are better ones out there).  One item I never thought I would like but in fact like vet much is the factory dash cover.  It holds my EZ pass in place and I can tuck the campground maps or other written directions under it to keep them handy. It does a good job hiding the wires to the garmin. All that and the dash underneath still looks new    A hard wired surge protector would have been a smarter investment. I believe the plug in unit I got from the mother ship was a good buy and have no regrets.

Just about every owner of a plug in surge protector eventually wishes they had bought a hard-wired surge protector. The Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C is as good as they get and the LED readout can be mounted almost anywhere so you can monitor the power and read fault codes, from the comfort of the interior.
Definitely buy online, it isn't something you will find at the Mothership..

Both of our LDs came with vinyl windshield covers (now an option). We used them occasionally but hated the cave-like interior in the daytime. This all changed when replacing them with see-through windshield covers.
http://www.sunguard.com/ We have a white, 90% light blocking sunshade and find the interior stays as cool as with the vinyl cover, maybe even cool due to the reflectiveness of the bright white color. The huge difference is the ability to look out without being able to seen,  just like the tinted windows.
For cold weather usage, I didn't notice much of an effect from the vinyl covers, instead have found that sealing the cab from the coach, with a heavy blanket, works best for us..

There are few items sold at the Mothership that you can't get elsewhere, other than repair parts unique to LD.
We did buy the insulated cab-over side windows covers and then added more insulation to them before installing and making the side windows lightproof and not sources of heat and cold.

The list has Fantastic Vent Insulative Vinyl Cover.  Are these needed for the fans?  Our LD is the 27' MB.

Btw, we did not get the factory back up camera.  We want one with a larger monitor.  If anyone is in So. Cal, especially inland empire/high desert area, and has had one installed, please chime in with your experience, costs, etc.

I agreed 100% with Larry about the superiority of the mesh windshield covers, whether from SunGuard in Palm Springs, CA or from SunPro in Yuma, AZ. While blocking 90% of heat, they let in plenty of light, tremendously brightening up the whole front end of the rig compared to the factory's opaque solid-vinyl cover. They let you see out, yet they provide complete privacy during the day. I gave away my factory cover and will never be without a mesh cover.

I also agree with his recommendation to buy the factory's insulated covers for the overcab windows (if your rig has them)--and don't forget to get snap-on insulated covers for all your interior vents and fans! (The Fan-Tastic fan vents take a slightly different type of cover than the plain vents, so be sure to get the right number of each type.) These vent/fan covers block both heat and light, so they're not only useful in winter, but also when sleeping late at any time of the year.

Before you invest in a backup camera with a large monitor, think carefully about where you will put it. A 5.6" monitor such as this one can easily fit on the cab ceiling without blocking  the standard rear-view mirror. That's an ideal location, because you can see it at a glance.

But when you get up into the 7"-8" range, you'll have to mount the monitor somewhere on the console, where there's limited real estate--and where looking at the monitor requires neck-swiveling. It may not sound like a big deal, but over time you'll find that it really makes a difference when you can view it by swiveling your eyeballs instead of your head.

If you plan to get valve extenders at any time in the future, make sure you mention it to Todd.  He'll show (sell) you the bolt caps (not sure of the exact name of them) that keeps the wheel cover from spinning and cutting off the valve extender.  They look like large, hollow screws.  8 of them cost about $35.

We got them when we were there last month picking up our rig.  I just called TireMan about the valve extenders and he was very glad I'd gotten the bolt caps already.

Hi Diana - My advice would be to slow down. Yes, the built-in Progressive is the best thing we did, but many other early choices have been supplanted by things we learned about from other LD owners.
If you live anywhere near where one of the Lazy Daze groups meet, try to get there and see and learn for yourselves.
We bought the bed sacks from the Lazy Daze store. Hated them. Bought the orange levelers, discarded them for something that works better for us. Bought the white vinyl windshield cover, then learned about the EZ Curtain. I could go on but my point is, as new RVers, you might take it slow and see things being used in the real world. Even Lazy Daze owners don't all have the same style of camping:) Linda - LD owner since 2008

Thanks everyone for sharing your advice and experiences!  The list has a few things we know we want to buy from LD but it's always good to hear what others bought there and are happy with or regret.

I don't know what climate you are in, but in our area where 0ยบ F is common, I would suggest getting the hose adapter with an air compressor fitting on one end. This will allow you to use the air compressor method of draining the plumbing.

Thanks, Dave!  We are in So. Cal, but at a high elevation and winters are much colder than most of So. Cal. Our large pond often has a layer of ice over it in Feb-March.  We do have an air compressor so will pass your advice on to Mark.

I love visiting Indianapolis!  Always something fun to do.  And my son and grandsons live about 30 mins. north.
