On July  2 we made the leap and ordered a 27 MB, Sliver/Gray from Todd. Delivery should be March/April of 2015. Did not go overboard on extras, 2nd solar panel, heated mirrors, table between couches and back up camera. I was a little dismayed at the $1200 price for the camera, tried to get them to install just the wiring so a Taddi unit could be installed, but no luck. Added a 110v outlet at curb side by overhead bunk. As we hate dangling wires, we tried to talk them into doing the wiring from the bottom up instead of overhead, but no luck. I guess that will be one of my projects. Would like to hear from anyone who has made this modification.
Thinking about Cirrus and wondered if it is all that it is cracked up to be. We still have some time to "tweak" our extras.
We are now starting a list of things we will need, so i expect to be asking a number of questions from you experienced hands!!

Rig to be called, "Silver Fox" and will  be in Seattle! Ian Walker/Jean Muir

I'm not sure I get the reference. Cirrus RVs, or...?

I'm guessing SiriusXM radio.   I brought that option but I have gone back and forth on its utility.   At $10 or so a month or about $120 a year I do wonder.   We do enjoy music.  We have a very large collection of music CDs.   We got two months free.  I'll let you know the results.

Guess you mean Sirius, the satellite radio service?
We have Sirius and really like it.  Way more channels than we need, but we enjoy listening to music while we travel and listening to "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" on NPR on the weekends.
We bought a lifetime membership many years ago which, by now, has more than paid for itself.  Would we pay for it today if we didn't have the lifetime membership?  That's a hard one to answer.  It sure beats trying to find new radio stations in each area as you travel, so the convenience, alone, is worth something.

I had XM installed, but stopped my subscription, as we don't full-time.  Actually, I prefer Pandora for variety!

We enjoy listening to NPR and MSNBC, plus some of the music channels.
For NPR shows, it's very nice to be able to hear the entire show as you drive from town to town, instead getting segments of it as the local stations fade in and out. We activate our subscription only during the 6 months we are actively traveling, so the cost is very reasonable at ~$13/month. Comparing that to the fuel for one day's travel at $150, it's not even on the radar.

I did recently discover a way to reduce our satellite TV service subscription costs. We'd been using the Dish RV prepaid service at $60/month (which we used for 2 or 3 months a year), but now that we also have Dish at home, we put the RV receiver on our home plan for $7/month.
Another benefit of having Dish at home, and something I did not even realize we could do until a year after we got it, is the ability to watch Dish over the internet on our iPads, even watching programs recorded on the home DVR. It takes a "decent" internet connection, but performance has been acceptable at various motels, campgrounds, airports, etc.

We've had an XM radio since we first got our rig (2002).  We also have a portable unit that lives in the tow car when we travel and in the house when we are home.  Though at home we tend to listen to Pandora much more than to SiriusXM.
Barbara also has on the order of 10,000 songs in her iTunes catalog, across a variety of genres, that end up on her iPad and iPods.  We have an aux audio input port in our rig that we can plug these into for other music choices.  But we still hear a lot of new artists/songs by listening to the satellite radio.
Our two biggest complaints about SiriusXM, is that they have eliminated two of our favorite channels over the years (Fine Tuning and the Village).  And it seems like their play lists for each channel have gotten pretty short.  If we listen to one channel for a couple of days we tend to hear the same songs.  So we tend to listen to a variety of the old rock channels.
If I were to do it today, I'd probably get a portable SiriusXM radio (like the Onyx we currently have) and car kits for the tow vehicle, the RV and for the house.

"Actually, I prefer Pandora for variety!"

I agree. I had XM satellite radio for six or seven years, but when Pandora became available I found that it did a much better job of playing the music I want to hear, as opposed to what somebody on the classical or jazz channel thinks I might like to hear. I ended up dropping XM a year or so later.

However, Pandora does require an internet connection, which can be a problem if you like to listen to the radio as you drive down the road or in remote locations. And it does use up bandwidth (about 40 megabytes per hour on average), which can be a problem if your data plan has a small limit. And if you're onto talk radio, news or NPR, Pandora's not going to satisfy you.

But just for music, I've found Pandora excellent... and cheaper than SiriusXM.

Thank you, some good comments. We tend to like classical and folk music and some jazz. Not all music is good "driving" music, which is different than listening or background music. We carry a bunch of CD's in the car, which is nice on short trips. Will look into Pandora, also the lifetime membership may be the way to go.

Thanks,

We have Sirius and the one major complaint I have about it is the poor sound quality. From what I have read this is a result of compression due to the sheer number of channels they crowd onto their bandwidth.

I wouldn't buy it again. I have read that this isn't a problem with XM and while I realize they are a merged company they aren't operating on the same bandwidth.

If you do a search on sirius sound quality you will find lots of complaints.

"Out of curiosity, what did a lifetime membership cost back then?"
As I recall, it was around $500...that was probably 10 years ago, maybe longer.  I don't think they offer a lifetime membership anymore...at least it wasn't on their website the last time I looked.
