Entry (screen) door weather stripping

If you have replaced the weather stripping on the entry door frame of your LD, which specific weather stripping product from which manufacturer did you use? Material, width, thickness? (The old strip was 5/8" wide; think that width has gone the way of the dodo.)

I've looked at the stuff at HD, Ace, Lowe's, and OSH; limited and repetitive selections! (Note: I've used the M-D brand of open cell foam before on a different application; the adhesive was very poor, so I want to avoid that brand.)

I've peeled, scraped, and cleaned the old 'crumbly with age' foam stripping and the very stubborn sticky, goopy adhesive residue off the door frame, and am ready to 're-strip'  Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

Joan, I purchased the stripping from Lazy Daze.  The first time I asked for it I was told they didn't have it.  But the second time Todd found it for me.  I still haven't replaced mine.  This is a project that I've been dreading. Vince gave me a little tool for the scraping..

No local store had *anything* other than the M-D (poor adhesion, and it bunches up), so, after searching and reading as many reviews as I could find, I ordered Frost King rubber weather stripping tape; the product number is R534H on the Frost King website. According to the Frost King website, their product line is available from Home Depot, Ace, Lowe's, Walmart, and DoItBest ONLINE, but I found the particular tape I ordered only from Ace and HD

This tape may be a tiny bit too wide, but the 1/2" is too narrow, and the width and depth choices are few. When the stuff arrives (shipped to a local HD), I'll post how it works out.  In the meantime, the screen door can just rattle in the frame!

I'm researching the same issue that Joan brought up in July 2014.  So the only coach rattle that we can't manage is somewhere in or around the screen door and coach door.  So I'd like to replace the existing thin, foam-like weather stripping with a more robust one.  So Joan, how did your Frost King rubber weather stripping work out?  Did it help to tone down the screen door rattle?  Thanks in advance.

I just replaced the weather stripping around the coach door with the brand that Joan recommended. Hardest part was getting the old stuff off and after trying to remove every bit with solvent, I gave up and left some remnants on the frame. Not to worry - the new stuff covered and adhered well. Only issue I had was the screen door sticking to the new stuff when I open the door. I rubbed a little Vaseline on the parts of the screen door frame that were sticking to the new stripping and that has helped. I did not have rattles except in the Camco screen door pet grille. I shimmed those.
Be aware that you can adjust the catch latch for the screen door on the door frame which may or may not help with how tightly the door closes and may have something to do with rattles. After installing the new weather stripping, I had to move the catch latch out (towards the outside while facing the door) a bit because the new stripping added depth to the door frame and I could not get the screen door opening/closing lever to catch. The old stripping had compressed over the years. That may be the cause of your rattle.

I replaced the weatherstripping around the entry door frame over a year ago with Frost King rubber foam adhesive-backed tape. The product number is R534H on the Frost King website; see link.

Rubber Foam Weatherseal - 5-Year Guarantee | Frost KingĀ® Products

The black tape is 3/4" wide and 5/16" deep, packaged in a 10' roll. For convenience, I ordered 2 rolls from Home Depot for store pick-up; this particular tape is not sold at the store (or, it wasn't when I ordered it); I thought the in-stock tape would be too flimsy to hold up.

The original open cell tape had crumbled almost to powder; the only part on the stuff that had lasted was the sticky backing, so it took some time and effort to "solvent and scrape" the residue off the door frame. Thorough surface prep is necessary, of course, or the new tape won't stick.)

Ideally, the tape should be 5/8" wide, but the 3/4" width works well if one is careful to fit the tape to each side/edge of the frame. Application is simple: apply short sections at a time, fitting the tape onto the frame without it overhanging, peeling the backing off as you go and pressing the tape down firmly, and not stretching the tape, particularly at the rounded corners at the top of the frame.

This tape is only slightly "compressible", so it forms a firm seat for the screen door; no rattles. I didn't have to adjust the door latch to accommodate the tape depth, but the screen door does require an "authoritative closure"! Far preferable to rattles, IMO, and, if I were re-stripping another entry door, I'd use the same material.

HTH.
