Adding TPMS monitoring to Toad

Hi all,

I'm considering adding  TPMS monitoring to my toad (a 2004 CR-V). Should I have the wheels re-balanced after I've added the Tire pressure sensors? Also should I swap out the existing rubber valve stems for metal ones?

Thanks in advance

I always have my Jeep wheels balanced with the TPMS sensors (PressurePro) in place.  I also had our motorhome wheels balanced with the sensors in place, before starting our current long trip.  For the Jeep it is nearly mandatory to get the oversized tires as perfectly balanced as possible.
I'd say the solid metal valve stems are a definite must for the screw on TPMS sensors.

For what it's worth...
When I had the stem extenders installed on the LD, they were balanced with the sensors on.   Placed them on the toad w/o balancing.   Next rotation and balance will probably balance with them on.   Since they weigh the same, I will switch them to the tire the monitor expects after balancing.

My 2011 CRV came with metal stems- seems a better idea than rubber.

David, I have been running TPS sensors on my '05 CRV for about 4-years with no problems with the rubber stems or the balance of the wheels. When balancing with new tire installation I did request that be done with the sensors attached even though that may not have been necessary. The same goes for the LD wheels about balancing.  I have just switched from the Tire Tracker system (too many sensor problems) to the TST brand. I am just completing a trip (several hundred miles) to Key West using the new TST system and have been very pleased with how well it has functioned. The sensor pressure readings were +/- 1 to 2lbs (max) of my high quality manual tire gauge. It is good that one can easily replace the sensor batteries when needed. The trip was also a test to see if a repeater was going to be necessary to receive the signals from the CRV tires and (as others have said) found that under all circumstances the repeater was not needed.  I am impressed with the quality of the TST system which I learned about from other members of this group.
All the best, Mike

We used the Doran RV360 for almost 6 years and in January 2014 switched to the Eeze RV TPMS which I bought at Quartzsite at the show.

I have never had the tires balanced with the sensors and haven't detected a difference but I don't see the harm in doing so. I also never put metal stems on the toad and have not had a problem in the past 5+ years of full timing in our 30' IB. That said, by all means be sure that you have some sort of stabilizer for the long metal stems on the inside duallys as I found out the hard way it can break the stem at its base.

I chose the Eeze over the TST because at the time the monitor on the Eeze had a bigger and better display. Interestingly, the sensors both flow through and non appear identical to those offered by TST. When I asked the business owner if they were made by the same company he neither confirmed or denied but just smiled.

I have had no lost sensor alarms. When first turned on it finds the sensors quickly and gives the current air pressure and I have not needed a repeater which was included at the show. I chose the flow through sensor for the LD and non for the toad a Subaru Forester since the flow through would have stuck out way too far.

Another reason I chose the Eeze is that the monitor has a user replaceable battery which the TST did not. That may have changed since then.

What I didn't like about the Doran was poor customer service, sensors that failed too quickly in my opinion and cost $30 a piece to replace. I probably needed a repeater which may have stopped the lost sensor issue.

So far I am very happy with the Eeze and have no interest in the business other than as a customer. I should add that I have contacted customer service a couple of times and have no complaints.
