uel pump/starting problems January 27, 2014, 09:56:57 am Yahoo Message Number: 144753I have a 2001 ld with the Triton V10 and had quite a bizarre problem after I took it out of storage. I had filled the gas tank and it sat for 6 weeks. When I returned it started right up and I put it on a site where it was parked and got it ready to travel The next day I started it and pulled it down to the end of the campground and left it run. When and got the car and had to shut it off when I hooked up the car. Then when I went to start it to leave it wouldn't start but turned over well(battery was it great shape). I thougt maybe I had pumped the gas pedalaccidentally so I left it sit a while and still wouldn't start. Kept trying this several times and then just stayed overnight and no luck the next am. Had it towed to a repair shop their first analysis was the fuel pump was bad and I said replace it($1100.00 sounds high to me). Next thing the call back and say the pump is OK but there was no gas in the tank. Said they put gas in and it started they drove it to a station and put $20.00 worth in. I picked it up to head out and when I tried to fill the tank discover that it was full after all. I drove to 150 miles to Quartzsite andhave been her 5 days now and it starts OK.. Sorry about the length but I thought all was pertinent. Any suggestions, Ideas or clues to what may be wrong or what could have happened. Also is $1100 too much for ainstalling a fuel pump!!Thanks is advance as usual.Jim
Re: uel pump/starting problems Reply #1 – January 27, 2014, 11:05:58 am Yahoo Message Number: 144754I do not know how to help but a little confused reading the post. Did you replace the fuel pump only to find that it was ok (spending the $1100)? Or once the mechanic started looking at the issue no trouble was found with the pump and you payed only the labor charge? I believe you are stating the second option but want to be sure. On a related issue someone a last fall had an issue with the engine cutting out and it turned out to be a fuel pump pickup going bad I think. Good luck.
Re: uel pump/starting problems Reply #2 – January 27, 2014, 11:09:24 am Yahoo Message Number: 144755Impossible to say without more data but it does sound potentially like an intermittent fuel pump. Many LDs, of your vintage have them replace. The fuel pump is on of the V-10's weak point. When it doe not start, testing for fuel pressure would be a good test to see if it is running and at the correct pressure. If not, the pump or it's electrical are suspect. If you do replace the pump, Bosch is a highly respect manufacturer, please do yourself a favor and stay away from Airtex products. $1100 is excessive for a part that cost less that $100, if just the pump is replaced, or less than $300, if the entire assembly of the pump, filter, fuel and gauge sender, are replaced (my recommendation unless the assembly is not available). This appears to be the pump for your 2001 E450. Rock Auto MOTORCRAFT Part # PFS20 $276.79 Make sure the Mechanic has the right service book for your LD. Many changes to the fuel system have been made over the years, even it they all look the same.Larry
Re: uel pump/starting problems Reply #3 – January 27, 2014, 11:56:38 pm Yahoo Message Number: 144774"Also is $1100 too much for installing a fuel pump!!" Not if it was at a Ford dealer. The price of a Ford OEM pump assembly at a dealer is usually in the $500 range. If they drop the tank and install the assembly, the total bill may be in the $1500 range.Forced to do it a couple of years back when the pump failed while traveling.Doug Baker
Re: uel pump/starting problems Reply #4 – January 29, 2014, 06:26:12 pm Yahoo Message Number: 144784Well the final report on this rig. It done it again in Yuma after I unhooked my car at the RV park, The good new is that I banged on the tank a number of times and it ran again and allowed me to drive it to the Ford garage. Might be worth a try if you get stuck out somewhere!! Can't hurt!! Thanks everyone for their advice and assistance. Two years ago I had to replace the transmission and with help from the people on this site a I got a great referral to a transmission shop that replaced it with a Ford Factory rebuilt which has worked flawlessly since.Jim Miday
