mud splash skirt?

We are the delighted owners of a new 27' RK and getting her ready for the first trip.  We've been researching splash guards for the rear and wonder what the collective wisdom of Lazy Daze folks might be.  Do we really need a mud guard to protect the towed?  How best to hang it if we put one on?  Any specific type recommendations?  Thanks!  Sue

"How best to hang it if we put one on?"

I recommend putting individual mudflaps as close as possible to the rear wheels. The further back from the wheels they are, the more likely to drag when you hit a bump, and throw stones back at your toad. I speak from experience.

After 10 years with an LD, we believe that a solid shield mounted behind the rear wheels and something like a "Protect-A-Tow" will work wonders in keeping the tow vehicle from suffering gross damage from debris that you will inevitably pick up and throw at the tow.  The one time I decided not to use our "Protect-A-Tow" cost us a front windshield as we suddenly came to new loose gravel on the roadway.  Another time a "road lizard" (tire tread) snuck up on us and careened under the rig, tore a small hole in the solid shield, and left a good mark and a couple of scratches on the tow.  We had the "Protect-A-Tow" mounted on that trip and I believe that it saved us some body damage to the tow.

Individual mud guards, mounted as Andy suggested, with give partial protection to your toad but nothing will keep it from getting chips. The guards must be set so they can never touch the ground. A car be be badly damaged, in just a few miles of towing on a gravel road or in a construction zone, if the flaps touch or are too close to the ground. It's best to trim them short. Guard can do only so much, just the air turbulence under the LD is enough to kick up sand and small pebbles.
Every form of guard has its downsides and most toad owners, after the first few trips, stop using any guard.
It's enough of a hassle just hooking the toad up. From my observations, the screens that connect under the RV and toad's bumpers seem to be the most effective but they can be very messy to deal with in muddy conditions.
New cars can have a clear plastic custom-cut plastic coating applied to the front end but it needs to be done when the paint is new and undamaged. Used cars can use 3M spray clear plastic coating system to give the paint some protection.
Windshields are next to impossible to protect so I consider them as expendable, they will get chipped and sand blasted no matter what you do. Budget a couple hundred bucks, every few years, for a new one. Do the same for your LD, its windshield will get chipped too.
A large percentage of windshield chips are the results of rocks thrown by passing vehicles. Many Alaskan travelers tell stories of damage from rocks thrown by the big rigs, passing at high speed in the opposite direction. There isn't much you can do about this except to get out of the way.

It's nice to have a new car but used can make sense for a toad, it is going to get chips no matter what you do. I drive a Jeep, it's suppose to look slightly damaged. Bring on the rocks.

Ditto. I have used Protect-A-Tow while towing two Hondas over the last 11 years. If anyone wants to see photos of the PAT connected, email me and I will send them to you. Here's a link to photos of mud flaps installed on an LD: https://plus.google.com/photos/117592111903674312719/albums/5628079638966580561?banner=pwa&authkey=CLPJu-aBhcHXQQ
