Reminder......Defrost your fridge!

Defrosted my fridge today.  I waited Waaaay too long.  Especially full timers, check the freezer back wall and the radiator in the box.  Mine was loaded with ice.  Took at least an hour to get it ice free.

Roger, I use my hair dryer to defrost the fridge and it takes about 1/2 -3/4 hour depending on how bad the ice has caked up and how fast I feel like moving. I turn off the fridge, put the frozen stuff in a cooler bag from Costco, and do the freezer first. Then take stuff out of the fridge section upper shelves and use the hairdryer on the fins. I am careful not to get too close to any plastic and also only use the medium heat and medium fan speed. Works very well.

To defrost our RV refrigerators, I've always filled a dish pan with the hottest water I can and put it in the freezer for 15-30 minutes.  That usually defrosts and loosens the ice to the point where it's very easy to take off with a PLASTIC spatula...just put the spatula under a corner and most of the ice falls off in one big piece.  The biggest advantage to this method, for us, over the hair drier method is 1) we're usually boondocking and 2) I don't own a hairdryer!

Dometic says to use pans of hot water. They also say,

DO NOT use a hot air blower. Permanent damage could result from warping the metal or plastic parts. DO NOT use a knife or an ice pick, or other sharp tools, to remove frost form the freezer compartment. They can create a leak in the ammonia system.

During coolish weather, I turn the refrigerator off at night before I go to bed.  Everything stays cold, but the ice loosens its grip on the metal, then usually is amenable to removal with a thin plastic spatula.

If I'm feeling ambitious, I take all the food out and put it into the sink (with a cover on it) and/or a cooler before encouraging the ice to come loose.  The sink makes a good "cooler" and there is no ice melt to deal with.  Just be sure to put something solid over the top to keep in the cold.  If the food does not completely fill the sink, you can put a heavy towel over the food to preclude needing to keep empty air cold during this period.  But be sure to put something solid on top, no matter how much of the sink is taken up.

Obviously if you have a length of Reflectix, it can be employed to good advantage in this method of cool retention.
