Recently there was some discussion about communications between the driver and the spotter while manuvering is tight quarters, or just to add one more level of safety for people and property.  My wife and I used these on a 37' sailboat and moved them to the RV when we sold the boat.  May seem expensive but if they save a life, prevent injury, or prevent backing into something, its worth it.  We find them quite handy.  Go to cruisingsolutions.com and look under communications for a picture of what they look like.

MARINER 500 HEAD SETS
 From: $69.95

Marriage Saver Headsets are just like cordless telephones - you can both talk & hear at the same time.  Once turned ON, they are full-time so you don't need to push any buttons to talk making them HANDS-FREE.

Good tip, Bob! Here's an article that describes (and links to) not only the Mariner 500 headsets, but higher-quality devices from Eartec... and as a bonus, describes a free (!) iPhone app, Walky Talky HD Lite, that can do the same hands-free job. Of course you both have to have iPhones, but many of us do these days.

Funny thing about the Mariner 500 headsets: they first appeared on the market ten years ago as $19.95-a-pair toys. Then the boating stores got hold of them... and presto, the price went up to $69.95 for the exact same item! You boaters are undoubtedly familiar with this phenomenon, but this is a particularly stark example.

That's why Boat is defined as "break out another thousand."  And why we are now in the LD.

Inexpensive 2-way headset have been sold for almost 20 years, Years ago, we had a off-road motorcycle club at work and adapted the headsets to fit inside our helmets, too bad their range was so short.
We switched to FRS radios, with headsets, for better range, and still use them today

Have you tried one of Walkie-Talkie apps for iPhones? From looking at the App store, it's not clear how they work.  Do they use cellular, Bluetooth, WiFi or a combination of them?

The app's description says, "A device with microphone, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is required. Range depends on local wireless coverage, No connection via internet or telephone network. Does not affect data usage."

The writer of that article said that Walky Talky HD was the only one that worked consistently, so I downloaded and installed that on my iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. It works, with about a quarter-second delay. (Not that that would be noticeable in actual use, when the two of you are at opposite ends of the rig.) If you use the earbuds that came with the iPhone, communication is full-duplex (talk and listen at the same time) and hands-free.

However, it took twenty to thirty seconds for the two phones to "find" each other, and another ten or fifteen seconds to initiate a call. Walkie talkies would be faster--just pick them up and turn them on. On the whole, based on my brief testing, I think the app is not the best solution.
