For those who have RV'd to Alaska, what's your opinion on towing a car?  I'm planning a trip next year and would prefer to not tow, but I would like input before deciding.

Thanks, Bob

I think it depends greatly on how you like to travel, what you want to see, and how much time you are spending.

We've been up there twice.  In 2005 we did not tow, but were traveling with another rig that was towing.  Having the tow was very useful.  We returned again last summer, were gone 5 months and both rigs were towing.  But we really like to get out and explore an area, including driving places we don't want to or can't take the rigs.  We spent a month just exploring South-East Alaska and the Inside Passage.  We scheduled our ferry reservations to get off at each ferry port and spend a few days exploring around each one.

You may get a sense of that trip by visiting my blog and starting with the first Alaska trip post (http://arts-work.blogspot.com/2012/05/mobius-arch.html).

My wife and I just returned last month from a three month trip (of a lifetime) to AK in our 2008 24' FL. We did not tow, using our rig for daily transportation. For us, not having a car was never an issue. With the exception of downtown Anchorage, the towns were all RV friendly. We traveled virtually every paved highway in the state, staying in 18 of the towns and cities two to five nights each. My primary interest was day hiking and we were able to access just about every trailhead, as well as the usual tourist sites, grocery stores, etc. Also, every highway we were on had major construction, with long sections completely torn up. Many sections are sealed with loose gravel. BTW, our LD performed flawlessly, with not one problem with the motor or the home.
That said, Art is correct. It depends much on your own particular RV lifestyle. However you decide, it will be a great trip.
I'd be happy to share AK observations and experiences if you have any other questions. You can e mail me privately.

We took our 2008 24' FD to Alaska last summer (2012). We did not take a toad, and for the most part, we did not miss having one. We actually met Art  and Bob and Diane while we were at Denali. They had their Jeeps with them which made me miss having mine along, but honestly the only time we would have used it would have been to go further into the Wrangel-Elias National Park. Of course having the Jeep would have opened up other side trip possibilities. For us on our first trip up there we did fine without. If we go back, I'd consider taking it.  Larry in Monument, CO

After several trips to AK, including a summer on the inside passage, in class B Sprinters, I can't say  NEVER missed not having a towed. Most of the time we were fine, we had electric bikes, but some time we wanted to go down roads that the RV really shouldn't be on. Next year we'll make what will be our last trip up, in our '06 MB, we will take our towed - a 1994 4x4 Sidekick. Would not go again without one.

Made a trip to central Mexico a few years ago in our '04 FL, without the towed, wished we had it several times.

It is a lot easier not to use it if you have it and don't need it, than it is to want (need) to use one and not have one with you.

Like pulling a boat, I always have 4x4 in my truck, I've never wished I didn't have it, but was sure glad I did several times.
